Girls Soccer Top 45 Players: Hannah Jones of Port Huron Northern is tops
Port Huron – When Hannah Jones was a young girl she tried a variety of sports.
But there was something about Jones, now 18, and a soccer ball that couldn’t be separated.
“It was my first love,” said Jones, a senior at Port Huron Northern. “I tried other sports and even ran cross country (at Port Huron Northern). But it just came naturally for me. My mom said she noticed that soccer was my best sport, by far.”
That’s a bit of an understatement. In fact, most high school and club coaches around the state tabbed Jones as the state’s most gifted player.
As a junior Jones earned All-America honors and was the 2015 Gatorade Michigan Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
These are just some of the many reasons why Jones, a midfielder, has been named State Champs 2016 Preseason Player of the year.
“She’s the type of player that makes everyone around her better. No one means more to her school than Hannah Jones. She’s a special player,” Northern coach Bryan Becker said. “In Port Huron, it’s not an area known for that many high-level soccer players. But she’s been incredible. She came in and has set all kinds of scoring records at our school. And we’ve been competitive since she’s been here. We captured our very first league title last year in the 19 years of our program. We’ve had winning records all three years she’s been here and we’ve been competitive even in our losses.”
As a sophomore and junior, Jones, who is 5-foot-7, was also named Macomb Area Conference Blue Division Player of the Year and Port Huron Times-Herald Area Player of the Year. She has turned the Huskies into a respected team, not a cellar dweller of the MAC Blue Division.
The two-time team captain was invited to the Nike National Training Camp the past three years and was also named by topdrawersoccer.com to the 2015 Spring Girls Great Lakes Region (Michigan and Wisconsin) 11-player All-Star team. She is ranked amongst the top 100 players in the nation in her age group.
Jones has not only shined at the high school level spent the past couple of years playing for Vardar in the Elite Club National League. With many of her Vardar teammates graduating last June, Jones made the switch over the to ECNL’s Michigan Hawks for the fall 2015 and summer 2016 season but with one stipulation. Jones would be allowed to play for her high school team as a senior. Many of the Hawks’ ECNL players in the high school age divisions do not suit up for their high school teams.
“There was no way I was going to give that up. I love playing with my friends, the girls I grew up with and (have gone) to school with all of these years,” Jones said. “We have fun together.”
And when Jones learned she wound be the valedictorian it topped off a great high school career. Jones had 92 goals and 31 assists entering this season and said her ultimate goal is to help Northern win its first district title.
Jones was heavily recruited by major universities from all over the country and, with a 4.0 GPA and a score of 27 on the ACT, Jones had many options. She elected to sign with Michigan State and is part of a stellar eight-player class. Jones is the first female in Northern history to sign with a major Division I soccer program.
“That’s quite an honor, really,” said Jones, a Miss Soccer candidate. “Playing college soccer has been a goal of mine for a long time.
“If I win Miss Soccer that would be cool. But that’s not why I play soccer (for awards). It’s an honor to be considered in the discussion. But that’s not something I can control. Helping my team win games. That’s something I can control.”
Jones could be a rarity in terms of a Miss Soccer honoree coming from a non-power school or conference. In 1995 Sara Kloosterman of Farmington Hills Harrison was named Miss Soccer despite coming from a program that finished below .500 for four years.
That hasn’t stopped her from being respected as a top-flight player. Jones is just enjoying her final months of her high school career, where she has definitely helped place her school on the soccer map.
“Although coming from a school with little high-school soccer tradition, Hannah led her team to its first league championship in 19 years last spring and looks forward reaching higher this season,” Becker said. ”Hannah’s main strength is in the midfield as a distributor, but in high school-play she uses her ball-skill and acceleration to get past opponents to get to the net, which leads to many of her goals. She is dedicated to working with her teammates and improving her game in the setting of educational athletics. Hannah has smashed all school scoring records, but she is not a selfish player, as her assist totals indicate.”

2. SYDNEY BLITCHOK, Grandville sr. M: If there is another player with the talent to place her team on her back and carry it to greatness, it’s Blitchok. Blitchok signed with Iowa and made the All-State Dream Team as a junior after scoring seven goals with 15 assists on a team loaded with college prospects. The Miss Soccer candidate is very technically sound with great field vision who has led her team to three district titles and one state runner-up trophy as a freshman. She is a highly-creative player who is adept as a set-up player and a clutch goal scorer.
3. MADDY VANDYKE, Hudsonville Unity Christian sr. D/M: While VanDyke won’t dazzle you with amazing ball skills, she’s an incredible athlete and a proven winner for one of Michigan’s top programs. During her junior school year, VanDyke lost her father but still remained focused to emerge as her team’s best player and lead Unity Christian to the Division 3 state title. She scored seven goals with two assists last season but her tenacious defensive style of play and leadership skills that was enough for her to earn All-State Dream Team accolades. Phenomenal in the air, the three-time all-stater signed with Michigan State. She also lettered in basketball and volleyball.
4. CONNER HUGGINS, Livonia Ladywood sr. D: One of the state’s top defenders, the center back signed with Villanova. Also a standout for her Vardar ECNL squad, the tenacious Huggins earned All-State First Team accolades last season and is very much in the discussion for Dream Team this season. She has great organization skills in the backfield with great pace and vision. She had 11 goals and 11 assists as a junior, high numbers for a defensive player.
5. SADIE MISIEWICZ, Holland sr. M: One of several in-state players who will play at Michigan State, Misiewicz is a two-time All-State player. A member of the Alliance Academy, she is also the two-time Holland Sentinel Player of the Year. She scored 21 goals last season directing the Dutch offense.
6. BAILEY KORHORN, Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central jr. F/M: Korhorn, who recently committed to Cincinnati, did not disappoint during her first two high school seasons, as she earned All-State First Team honors as a sophomore after scoring 20 goals with nine assists. The versatile Korhorn is a complete package, as she can score, set-up teammates, create in transition and defend.
7. RILEY TANNER, East Kentwood soph. F: Widely-considered the state’s top sophomore, Tanner debuted onto the scene as a deadly sniper who haunted opposing defenses with 15 goals and 15 assists and earned All-State First Team accolades in helping the Falcons reach the state semifinals. High-level club and national team possibilities might take her away from the high school soccer game, but if she plays Tanner will likely be a top candidate for Miss Soccer as a senior in 2018. She committed to South Carolina.
8. ASHLEY LEONARD, Troy Athens jr. F/M: A high-level Division I recruit, Leonard collected 26 goals with eight assists last season despite the Red Hawks playing a brutally-tough schedule and helped her team reach the state semifinals. She is the type of player who can take over the game with one play and always draws the attention of the opposing team’s top defensive player. Leonard recently committed to Western Kentucky.
9. LIBBY MUNOZ, Leland sr. F/M: You won’t find too many better all-around athletes than Munoz, who is All-State First Team Class D in basketball and Division 4 All-State First Team in soccer, where she is making headlines. Also a standout on her Midwest United Club Team, Munoz entered the season with 164 career goals and is only 31 tallies away from becoming Michigan’s all-time leading scorer in soccer. She decided to attend Kalamazoo College, where she can play both soccer and basketball.
10. GRACE LABADIE, Kalamazoo Loy Norrix sr. D/M: With Loy Norrix set for perhaps its best season, Labadie signed with Indiana and is a well-rounded player for the Knights. The play-maker finished with 14 goals and 10 assists last season and earned All-State Honorable Mention, but is slated for much bigger accolades this season as the top player from the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek area. Labadie can play all over the field for the Knights.
11. CECILIA STEINWASCHER, Utica Ford jr. F: After missing half of her freshman season, Steinwascher bounced back to have a fine sophomore season and earn All-State First Team honors. She is an ODP Region II player who still earned All-Macomb County First Team and All-MAC Red Division honors each of the past two seasons and is being recruited byhigh level college programs.
12. GABRIALA JODZIS, Utica Eisenhower jr. M: One of the state’s top juniors, Jodzis juggled multiple scholarship offers before recently selecting Michigan State. A fine versatile player, she finished with All-State Third Team on a team loaded with college prospects after scoring 15 goals with 18 assists and now holds a top 150 national ranking as a junior.
13. DEVYN BROUGH, Walled Lake Northern sr. M/F: Brough Signed with Auburn. She helped the Knights to a top-10 ranking all of last year and earned All-State Third Team honors on a team with five Division I recruits. The lightning-fast attacker scored 17 goals as a junior after playing for the Michigan Hawks as a sophomore.
14. SHANNON CASEY, Utica Eisenhower sr. F: One of many standouts for the Eagles, Casey signed with Villanova. Named to the All-State Third Team last season, Casey is a pure goal scorer who had 21 goals and 10 assists as a junior. She also plays for Vardar’s ECNL club team and is an ODP Region II player.
15. DARLINE RADAMAKER, Utica Ford soph. M: Radamaker stopped playing early last season because she was called up to the U-23 Haitian National Team and even played in a game against the U.S. national team at Ford Field. Now back at Ford, Radamker is expected to make a major impact for a team that should be one of the state’s best.
16. BRI COSTIGAN, Fenton sr. D/M: Put her in the back as she’s a lockdown defender and put her in the midfield and she’s a playmaker on offense, scoring goals and assisting on others. She signed with Cincinnati. Costigan was instrumental in leading the Tigers to the Division 2 state final last season, a season where she earned All-State First Team honors. Costigan has keen field vision, is great in the air and can find open teammates as well as finishing plays.
17. LEXI TRUDEAU, Grand Blanc sr. M: Tredeau is one of just a few players from the U-18 ECNL Michigan Hawks that will play high school soccer this spring. A four-year starter who helped Grand Blanc reach the 2015 Division 1 final last spring, Tredeau signed with Louisiana-Monroe. She is lightning-quick and is gunning for her fourth All-State award this season as the Bobcats’ top player.
18. TAYLOR PARDOSKI, Rochester Hills Stoney Creek sr. F/M: Headed to Elon University, Pardoski still earned All-State Second Team last season playing alongside seven seniors who are now on college rosters. Capable of being a scorer or distributor, this will be Pardoski’s team and is quite capable of shouldering that load.
19. MARLIEDA BRINGARD, Midland sr. M: At 5-foot-11, Bringard simply dominates in the center of the midfield. She’s dynamite in the air, boasts great vision as a set-up player and can both score and defend. She committed to Central Michigan after her sophomore season and collected 12 goals with seven assists as a junior in leading the Chemics to a region finals.
20. OLIVIA JANKE, Plymouth sr. F: Janke is always a threat when touching the ball on the attack, either as a goal scorer or setting up teammates. Headed to Valparaiso in the fall, she scored 11 goals with eight assists last season leading Plymouth to the KLAA South Division title. She earned All-State Second Team status last season.
21. CHLOE ALLEN, Novi sr. F/M: Headed to Akron, Allen is another talented player who can both distribute and score on the attack. She finished with 12 goals and five assists last season, and earned All-State Third Team. She’s efficient on the wings with her speed, shot and attacking ability.
22. KATRINA KOOMEN, Novi sr. D/M: A dynamite player as a freshman and sophomore, Koomen took her junior year off to train with her ECNL Michigan Hawks club team. This season she back with the highly-talented Wildcats and is expected to be amongst the state’s top players. Koomen is an aggressive defensive-minded player who thrives on helping shut down high-level scoring threats. She has signed with College of Charleston.
23. LYDIA FRANKS, East Kentwood sr. M/F: After fighting through injuries last season, the speedy Franks is back and ready to help the Falcons contend for another OK Conference Red Division title and a possible long tournament run. She is also a standout on the Midwest United club team and has signed with Michigan State.
24. EMILY ASHBY, Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern soph. M: A rising star who is now in the ODP national pool and ranked amongst the top 100 sophomores nationally, Ashby has fielded offers from Notre Dame, Kentucky, Michigan State, Iowa, Penn State, Michigan, Duke, Oregon, Miami Florida, Vanderbilt and more. She is a well-rounded player who can service as a set-up player, lock-down defender or finisher. Also plays for Midwest United club team that is a three-time MRL state champion.
25. KASEY JAMIESON, Lansing Christian soph. F/M: In her debut season, Jamieson carved up opposing defenses like a hot knife through butter, collecting 46 goals while leading the Pilgrims to the Division 4 final. Also a member of the ECNL Michigan Hawks, Jamieson is still playing prep soccer and is talented enough to set records, and lead her school to postseason success the next three years.
26. VICTORIA LUCIDO, Auburn Hills Oakland Christian jr. F/D: A defensive player on her ECNL Vardar club team, Lucido spends most of her time in the midfield or at forward at the high school level. She set a school record as a sophomore with 42 goals and was named All-State First Team. More noteworthy, Lucido was named the 2015 National Christian School Athletic Association (NCSAA) National Player of the Year honoree.
27. ABBEY LORENZ, Woodhaven sr. F/M: Just as Woodhaven has climbed the charts as a respectable program, Lorenz has also gained notoriety. She earned All-State Second Team honors last season and led her team to a league and district titles. She has fielded many D-I offers and may rejoin the fold in the future. Entered the season with 70 goals and 50 assists.
28. MADDIE FOUTS, Richland Gull Lake sr. M: A key force for the three-time defending Division 2 champions, Fouts will shoulder a much bigger load this season for the Blue Devils. Following in the footsteps of older sister, Rachel, the youngest sibling has signed with Ferris State. She earned All-State First Team status last season after providing six goals and 25 assists.
29. RACHEL PHILLPOTTS, Flint Powers jr. D/F: Named All-State First Team last season, the Division I recruit collected 18 goals with 12 assists for a state semifinalist. She also spends time in the backfield when needed instead of being a goal-scoring threat.
30. DANIELLE STEPHAN, DeWitt jr. M: On a team that did not start any seniors in 2015, Stephan helped her team make a run to the Division 2 semifinals. She earned All-State First Team honors and CAAC Red Division MVP honors last season and is gaining plenty of college interest.
31. MYA FREGOLI, Romeo soph. M: Part of a loaded sophomore class in Michigan, Romeo has never had a player like Fregoli, who recently committed to Michigan State. Ranked as one of the top 150 sophomores in the country, the Vardar ECNL player is an ODP Region II player who was invited to the national camp the past two years. Fregoli is good at seeing the field and changing the point of attack. She led both her club and high school team in assists last year.
32. BETSY LUECK, Warren Regina soph. F: It’s too often that a freshman will earn All-State First Team honors in D-1 or D-2. Then there is the high-flying Lueck, who was instrumental in leading Regina to the quarterfinals last spring. The sky is the limit for this rising star.
33. ANGELA DAVIS, Trenton jr. M: A very dynamic playmaker and a great defensive player in the middle of the field, Davis was a huge reason while the Trojans made a run to the state semifinals. Adept on set pieces, Davis finished with 16 goals and 19 assists. She was named All-State First Team. Davis has committed to national champion Grand Valley State.
34. ROSELLA LOCHIRCO, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep sr. M: Plagued by injuries as a sophomore, Lochirco returned healthy last season and helped Notre Dame Prep make the leap to Division 2 last season and also aided the Irish’s push for a district title. Lochirco will likely play at Kalamazoo College. She was All-State all three seasons.
35. CAROLINE FLEMING, Grosse Ile sr. M: Fleming has been a standout or a program that was 57-1-1 during the regular season during her first three years and has won league and district championships each year. She scored 40 goals with 32 assists last season to garner All-State First Team accolades and entered the season with 82 career goals with her name all over the Grosse Ile record books.
36. SIERRA GRODSINSKY, Hemlock sr. F/D: Grodsinksy made the switch to Vardar’s ECNL club team a couple of years ago, where she stars as a lightning-quick defender. On the high school scene, she starts games at forward and is a goal-scoring machine. She will also be sent to center back to help protect a lead. Scored 42 goals as a junior and has signed with Oakland.
37. ASHLEY ROMANOWSKI, St. Clair Shores Lake Shore sr. F: One of the best from Macomb County and clearly one of Michigan’s most underrated players, Romanowski found the goal over 90 times entering this season and is a two-time Division 2 All-State player. An absolute steal for college coaches still seeking a late signee.
38. KALEY BUCK, Paw Paw sr. F: One of western Michigan’s top talents, Buck put together a standout performance as a junior with 27 goals and 10 assists, good for All-State First Team accolades for the second straight season. She is off to an offensive tear this season. Buck is a steal for 2015 NAIA national champion Spring Arbor.
39. DAGNY HILL, Detroit Country Day jr. D/M: Earning All-State First Team honors as a sophomore, Hill is a speedy lock-down defender whose stock is rising. She is also a quality attacking player who can finish and versatile enough to play all over the field.
40. MORGAN OTTESON, Grand Rapids Northview soph. F: Otteson debuted onto the scene last season and quickly gained the reputation of being a sniper up top. Named All-State Second Team, Otteson had 24 goals and 11 assists before a injury kept her on the sidelines for most of the final weeks of the season. Division I schools have her high on their radar.
TOP GOALKEEPERS
1. OLIVIA ARGEROS, Rochester Adams sr.: After earning All-State Dream Team honors as a sophomore and committing to Michigan State in the summer of 2014, Argeros had some injury issues late in her junior season, which dropped her to an All-State Second Team status. The gifted, agile goalie was recruited by over half of the Big Ten and is now healthy and turning heads again. Argeros will need to stand on her head to make the young Highlanders competitive once again. She makes the saves that few goalkeepers can reach.
2. ISABEL NINO, Detroit Country Day jr.: A total of nine shutouts and a 0.56 goals-against-average doesn’t tell the whole story for Nino. Named All-State First Team after leading Country Day to the state runner-up showing, Nino has been brilliant between the pipes during her career. Also a member of the ECNL Michigan Hawks, Nino recently committed to Michigan.
3. AMANDA HARRIS, Troy Athens sr.: A Division I recruit for both soccer and hockey who has yet to make a college decision, Harris has been sterling in goal during her high school career. She garnered All-State Second Team honors as a junior while posting a 0.70 GAA and four shutouts last season against one of the state’s toughest schedules in helping Athens reach the state semifinals. She shines against top-notch competition.
4. OLIVIA RECKLEY, Grosse Ile sr.: A two-time All-State First Team representative, Reckley is a four-year starter and statistically one the state’s best. She recorded 22 shutouts as a junior, second best all-time in Michigan for a single-season tally. Her 55 career shutouts through three years already ranks her in the top 10 all-time in state history.
5. MAIA PEREZ, East Kentwood jr.: As the Falcons made a run to the state semifinals last season, Perez was the caboose stoking the engine. She earned All-State Third Team honors and has gained college interest. Perez’s is far from her ceiling and has her best ahead of her.
