Goalkeeper Quesnelle makes big stops as Fenton survives in shootout in Division 2 region final

Farmington Hills – Fenton and Warren Regina needed a shootout in order to declare a Division 2 regional champion on Thursday.
After ending regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods 0-0, Fenton held on to defeat Regina 5-3 in the shootout.
Fenton had a 4-3 shootout lead when goalkeeper Abigail Quesnelle made a save on Audrey Flemming’s attempt for Regina.
“For the save I just had to keep myself calm, remind myself that I can do it,” Quesnelle said.
Following Flemming’s miss, Brennan Sullivan ended the game with her shot that landed in the bottom right corner.
Regina had 19 scoring chances, with the best one coming at the 10:56 mark in the first half. Jackie Pattison missed a wide open net after Quesnelle was caught out of position on a cross from Betsy Lueck.
Quesnelle had eight saves but the best save of the game came from her counterpart, Sarah Hirschmann, who made a diving stop in the second overtime to keep things even.
Fenton will play Trenton in the semifinals on Tuesday at West Bloomfield at 7 p.m.
“You could argue Regina was the better team,” Fenton coach Matt Sullivan said. “How hard these girls play for each other, and have all year long, that really came up all the way to the end.”
