“I Just Feel Blessed to Win It” – Mr. Basketball Winner Monte Morris Talks about being a State Champ!

Flint Beecher and senior guard Monte Morris are in the middle of another state run, and they have a big test tomorrow against Detroit Consortium in the Class C quarterfinals. But today was all about Monte Morris, as he was named the 2013 winner of the Hal Schram Mr.Basketball award. Morris edged out Chandler Park Academy and Michigan commit Derrick Walton by just 44 points to claim the title.
"It feels good to win, Derrick Walton and Kahlil Felder are great guys", said Morris. "They bring a lot to the table, and I just feel blessed to win it, and with the work I put in, I feel like I deserve it". Morris also beat out Rochester and Kentucky bound forward James Young, Pershing’s Kahlil Felder, and Dowagiac’s Dontel Highsmith decisively.
Morris also became just the third player from Flint to be named Mr.Basketball, joining Kelvin Tolbert in 2001 and Glen Rice in 1985, both out of Flint Northwestern.
"It’s very special, and I know that my name will be around a lot probably for a lifetime in the area", Morris said. "No one has brought it back since Glen Rice and and Kelvin Tolbert, so for me to be the third guy to do it is big time, and the first one at my school".
Iowa State will be Morris’ next stop after he leaves high school to play college ball there, and he is already being talked about as possibly contributing as a freshmen. Morris says he plans to leave for college early, and should feel at home, as the Cyclones boast three Michigan natives already on the roster."
"He is a leader, he has a high basketball IQ, and he makes everyone around him better", said Beecher head coach Mike Williams. "I don’t know of a kid who doesn’t want to play with him".
