ICE BREAKER CLASSIC: Reigning D3 champ Pewamo-Westphalia stifles Southfield A&T

YPSILANTI — Pewamo-Westphalia’s championship last season was predicated on lock-down defense. That hasn’t changed.
The reigning Division 3 champions held D1 runner-up Southfield A&T to just five points in the second and third quarters combined, using their 18-point advantage in those two quarters to pull away for a 43-31 win at the the Seventh Annual Girls Basketball Ice Breaker Classic on Saturday.
After just two points in the first, Hannah Spitzley scored eight of her game-high 17 points in the second quarter, as the Pirates (1-1) outscored A&T (1-1) 13-0 to erase a five-point deficit at the end of the first quarter, and lead by eight at the half, 24-16. Spitzley and Ellie Droste both had five points in the third, matching A&T’s offensive output, as P-W took a 34-21 lead into the final quarter. Kiera Thelen had seven of her 15 points in the fourth, as the Pirates held off a rally from A&T.
Cheyenne McEvans had 16 points to lead A&T, while Jasmine Worthy had nine.
Southfield A&T opens play in the Oakland Activities Association’s Red Division with a home date against Royal Oak on Dec. 17, while P-W opens play in the Central Michigan Athletic Conference with a home game against Portland St. Patrick on Dec. 11.
