It’s Always Sonny In Toledo: UDJ Hoopster Sonny Wilson Selects Toledo For College
The City of Toledo is going to be on “Sonny Time” soon enough.
For fans of Catholic League hoops in Metro Detroit, Sonny Time means PRIMETIME 24kmagic.
Detroit U-D Jesuit senior point guard Sonny Wilson committed to the University of Toledo this week, delivering a 2023 Mr. Basketball candidate into the fold for Rockets Nation.
Oakland University, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, U-D Mercy and Cleveland State were also in contention for Wilson’s services. Toledo won the MAC last season with a 26-8 record.
The fierce and fearless 6-0 floor general has been a standout in the backcourt at U-D Jesuit since he was a freshman. He plays with intelligence, a flair for the dramatic and always exhibits a warrior’s spirit baseline to baseline every time he steps foot on the court. His clutch antics and steady-handed leadership are already things of legend in the storied CHSL. During his sophomore season, he hit the game-winner on a drive into the lane in the closing seconds of the Catholic League Championship Game against Birmingham Brother Rice,
As a junior, Wilson dotted the stat sheet for 23 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds per night last season on UDJ’s sixth straight regional championship-winning club. Toledo has feasted on talent from Metro Detroit in recent years on the recruiting trail.
The CHSL Central should have at least four players in the running for Mr. Basketball this winter. Wilson will join Brother Rice’s Curtis Williams (Louisville) and John Blackwell (Wisconsin) and Warren De La Salle’s Mike Sulaka of the defending D1 state champion Pilots. Expect Wilson’s future UT teammate, Brother Rice forward Xavier Thomas to be a potential sleeper in the 2023 Mr. Basketball race.
