King’s Lavert Hill chooses U-M over MSU
Detroit – Lavert Hill of Detroit King said his decision to sign with Michigan over Michigan State on Wednesday was somewhat influenced by his brother, Delano, a Detroit Cass Tech graduate who is part of the U-M program.
Cass Tech coach Thomas Wilcher said it had everything to do with family and everything else was secondary.
Hill was a student at Cass Tech before transferring to King for his senior year.
“Family. Family makes the difference,” Wilcher said. “I knew the decision he would make would be good. He had structure. Family is what builds the bond. Keeping yourself at that level, to do the things they need to do.”
Hill is a 5-10, 175-pound defensive back-receiver who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds. He originally committed to Penn State then de-committed last fall. Hill played a huge role in King’s 14-0 season and Division 2 title, the second in school history.
Hill said he awoke at 5:30 a.m. and made his decision soon after. He said the U-M fight song, The Victors, came into his head.
In addition to his brother Hill said Jourdan Lewis, another Cass Tech graduate and an All-Big 10 defensive back, was in contact with Hill in an attempt to lure him to Ann Arbor.
“(Lewis) was texting me before I made my decision,” Hill said. “He was pretty happy when I told him.”
Hill said he’s excited to be a part of a recruiting class ranked in the top five (according to ESPN) nationally.
“It’s pretty good,” he said. “It’ll be great if we get (Rashan) Gary.”
About three hours after Hill made his decision know, Gary (6-4, 290), a defensive tackle from Paramus, New Jersey, and the No. 1 player in the country, announced on ESPN that he was going to U-M. Clemson was reportedly his second choice.
