Macomb Area Conference and Catholic League to take part in Calihan Challenge

Detroit – The Macomb Area Conference and the Detroit Catholic League will take part in the “Calihan Challenge” this Saturday and next weekend at Calihan Hall on the Campus of Detroit Mercy.
This weekend girls basketball teams from both conferences will take part in the showcase on Saturday afternoon and next weekend, boys basketball teams will take the floor.
The girls basketball games taking place on Saturday will begin with Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes playing Marysville at 12:30, followed by Utica Eisenhower taking on Livonia Ladywood at 2:00 and at 3:30, Utica will face Warren Regina. In the 5:45 game, Farmington Hills Mercy and Port Huron Northern and the final game of the night will be last year’s Class A State Champion Warren Cousino facing Birmingham Marian.
“I think it’s a great event,” Farmington Hills Mercy head coach Gary Morris said. “It’s great for our kids to play at Calihan Hall and it’s a great opportunity for them. For the league itself, it’s very good. Playing against very good competition, because that will help us down the road.”
Mercy is out to a 1-0 start on the season after Wednesday’s season opening win over Plymouth Salem and taking on Port Huron Northern, ranked No. 4 in the State Champs! Preseason Team Rankings.
Morris said he and his team embrace tough early season matchups like Saturday’s game against Northern.
“We’re to the point in our program, we’ll play anybody and that’s the way we’ve been doing it for a while,” he said. “That’s the way you get better. It’s a good early test to see where we measure up against a team that’s highly ranked.”
Next Saturday, December 10th, the boys teams from both conferences will take part in the Calihan Challenge, beginning with New Haven playing Detroit Loyola at 12:30.
Grosse Pointe South and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s will play in the second game of the day at 2:00, while Sterling Heights Stevenson and Detroit Catholic Central will tip off at 3:30. Warren De La Salle and St. Clair Shores Lakeshore will play at 5:30, before the top game of the showcase, as last year’s Class A state champion, Detroit U-D Jesuit will take on Macomb Dakota in a rematch of last season’s Class A semifinal.
