Mark Thomas resigns as coach at South Lyon

By: Tom Markowski, September 21, 2015, 9:52 pm

South Lyon – Mark Thomas resigned as head varsity football coach at South Lyon on Monday.

Thomas coached the first two games this season but was not on the sidelines the last two weeks. South Lyon (2-2) won its first two games then lost the last two.

Thomas would not go on record as to why or what specific incident led to his resignation but he did say he was disappointed he had to go out in midseason.

“Sometimes you have to do what you feel right,” he said. “(The administrators) like what I was doing. I can’t talk a lot about it. I was doing what was right for the kids. I’ve always been a players’ coach.

“I can live with my decision. I’m all right.”

Thomas was in his 24th season as a football coach at South Lyon, his 12th as the head coach. Before going to South Lyon Thomas coached 14 years at Harbor Beach.

South Lyon was 8-2 last season. South Lyon’s best finish under Thomas was 10-3 and that came in his first season as head coach.

Jeff Henson, Thomas’ assistant, will take over as head coach. Henson is a former head coach at Lincoln Park.

Thomas will remain a teacher in the South Lyon school district and he has not ruled out coaching at another school.
