Midwest Recruiting: Michigan Girls Soccer Preseason Top 30 Players: WL Northern’s Wolfe and Marian’s Eichenlaub among Midwest’s best

By: Dan Stickradt, April 27, 2018, 2:24 pm

This is a transition year of high school girls soccer in Michigan.

The first year of the U.S. Soccer Developmental Academy for girls soccer has lured approximately 200 players away from high school soccer in Michigan and some 6,400 nationally.

Nevertheless, there’s an abundance of talent as legions of current players are signed, committed or are being recruited by colleges at all levels, including numerous at the NCAA Division I and Division II level.

While there are no clear favorites for Miss Soccer or the spots on the All-State Dream Team, State Champs will instead chart the state’s best prospects in various categories instead of ranking players.

Here’s as detailed a list as any devoted soccer fan will find of the Michigan players to watch for this season.

TOP 30 FIELD PLAYERS (Listed Alphabetically):

KRISTIN BOOS, Sterling Heights Summit Home School jr. F/M (DePaul): Several Detroit-area coaches tabbed Boos as one of the state’s top 10 players, even though she won’t be found on the All-State lists. Her team is the defending Western Michigan Christian Home School Athletic Association state cup champion and qualifier for the Midwest Home School Tournament the past two years. A member of the FC United club, Boos has trained with the Tottenham (England) Hotspurs and has ample international training. Her ball skills and field vision are elite. Summit will play mostly MHSAA D-2, D-3 and D-4 schools this year to showcase Boos.

ANNIE BRUCE, Birmingham Marian sr. M (Cincinnati): Bruce came back from the Nationals Union Academy at the beginning of March and will indeed help keep Marian near the top of the rankings. She is a steady ball-winner and distributor in the midfield. Although tucked behind five All-State players on Marian’s stacked roster last season, Bruce is one of the pistons that will power the Mustangs’ fine-tuned engine.

ALLY CHILDERS, Grand Blanc jr. M (Michigan State): As a holding central midfielder, Childers does not rack up stats. She doesn’t lose the ball very often either. Childers is the best defender in transition for the loaded Bobcats, dominant in the air and is spot on with distribution skills.  She came back from the Nationals Union Academy at the start of March.

SAMMI CORCORAN, Dexter sr. M (Ball State): Corcoran is a proven winner. In her previous two years of high school soccer, Corcoran helped Dexter capture two Southeastern Conference and district titles. Dexter also won a regional title (2016) and was a regional finalist last season. Corcoran plays club for the Michigan Alliance and was Division 2 All-State Second Team last season. She is also a four-year letter winner in basketball helping the Dreadnaughts win two SEC titles.

ANNIKA DAHLMANN, Saline sr. D/M: Opting not to play college soccer and heading to Michigan to concentrate on academics, Dahlmann is an anchor of a stingy defensive-minded team that has enjoyed ample success the past few years. Dahlmann helped Saline win 19 games, conference, and regional titles last season and a spot in the D-1 semifinals. She also started on the Hornets’ 2015 state championship team. Last season Dahlmann was All-State second team.

JANSEN EICHENLAUB, Birmingham Marian jr. F (Virginia): Perhaps the most heralded player on Marian’s super-talented roster, Eichenlaub committed to national powerhouse Virginia last year. A member of Vardar ECNL on the club side, Eichenlaub led Marian (24-0-0) with 28 goals last season and was selected to the Dream Team. She’s a pure goal scorer who is a nightmare to mark because she’s simply dangerous every time she touches the ball.

MORGAN ESCH, Dexter sr. M/F (unsigned): The reigning Ann Arbor area Player of the Year, Esch scored 27 goals and is another player that has a knack for scoring clutch goals in big games. She earned All-State Second Team honors last season, although an injury will limit her play in the early part of this season.

KATE FACE, Marshall jr. F/M (Indiana State): One of the state’s top juniors, Face guided Marshall to its best season a year ago that included conference and district titles, and a regional final appearance. Of her 32 goals last season, seven were game-winners. She also added 10 assists and was named All-Interstate Eight Conference MVP and All-State First Team Division 2. She’s exceptionally fast and explosive with the ball in the offensive third of the pitch.

MYA FREGOLI, Romeo sr. M (Michigan State): Although Fregoli was just an Honorable Mention Division 1 All-State last season in a deep regional, she committed to MSU two years ago and is slated for big things as one of the state’s best playmakers. Fregoli is known for her deft touch, field vision, and passing ability, and can break open a game with her speed and shooting ability.

ZOE GAFFNEY, Birmingham Seaholm sr. M (Liberty): One of several Michigan players who signed with Liberty, Gaffney earned D-1 All-State Second Team honors last season. She’s sick in transition and equally dangerous as both a set-up player and goal scorer (12 goals and 14 assists). This is Seaholm’s best team since the mid-1990s and Gaffney is the Maples’ field general.

ITALA GEMELLI, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep soph. F: Sitting behind several All-State players as a freshman, Gemelli quietly chalked up double figures in points (17 goals, 12 assists) last season in helping her team reach a D-2 regional final. Now she’s gaining interest from Big 10, ACC, SEC and Horizon League schools, and is set for a breakout season as one of the state’s top sophomore talents. She was a member of two national club championships for the Nationals in recent years.

NIKKI HAYES, Elk Rapids sr. F (South Carolina): One of just a few Michigan players headed to an SEC school, Hayes is one of the top D-4 talents in the state. She has 75 career goals and is a three-time all-conference, all-district, all-region and All-State selection (First Team as a junior). She notched 27 goals with 11 assists last season, many against larger schools, and is capable of leading Elk Rapids to a long tournament run once again.

MEIKE INGLES, Utica Eisenhower soph. M (Iowa):  One of the Top 150 sophomores in the country, Ingles garnered a release from her Nationals Union Academy to play for the Eagles once again. Earlier this year she had 20 goals in 13 Academy games. She attended a U.S. Soccer U-16 National Team Camp on the club side in November and is expected to have a big season for Eisenhower, which again will play a tough schedule. She was all-conference, all-district and All-Macomb County as a freshman.

KASEY JAMIESON, Lansing Christian sr. F/M (Liberty): If a D-4 player is ever going to win Miss Soccer, this might be the year. Jamieson is one of the state’s most prolific goal-scorers in the past decade, collecting over 150 career goals, including 44 (and 16 assists) last season. Named All-State Dream Team as a junior, Jamieson was named All-State First Team (D-4) each of the last three years. Jamieson is big, strong and fast and always draws defensive attention from every team the defending state champions play.

MORGAN JONES, Saline sr. M (unsigned; attending Michigan for academics): Jones helped Saline win a D-1 state in 2015 and a semifinal appearance last season. Jones was All-State First Team after earning Second Team as a sophomore. She isn’t flashy but is rock solid at her holding center midfield position. She’s great in the air, physically strong and is a fine passer as a set-up-style player.

AUDREY KOPITZ, Livonia Stevenson sr. F (Madonna): Although she was recruited by numerous D-I and D-II schools the past couple of years, Kopitz has elected to play down in the NAIA at the collegiate level. That doesn’t mean she isn’t a worthy opponent. Kopitz has wreaked havoc on teams on both the high school and club levels for years. She received the most votes of any player in her district last season, the state’s toughest district, and was All-State First Team after collecting 24 goals and 13 assists. On the club circuit, she helped the Michigan Rush win a state cup title in 2017. She currently is recovering from knee surgery.

BETSY LUECK, Warren Regina sr. M/F (Toledo): A three-time All-State selection, Lueck is amongst Regina’s all-time greats and entertained D-I college scholarship offers from around the country. Always drawing the attention of opposing teams’ defenses, Lueck can both finish and set up teammates. With the Satellites moving down to D-3 this season, its possible Lueck could lead Regina to its first state title. She came back from the Nationals Union Academy to do just that.

GABRIELLE MCCASLIN, Plymouth soph. F (Mississippi State): As a freshman, McCaslin burst onto the scene in grand fashion, scoring 16 goals for a team that reached the quarterfinals in D-1. She is another player who is quickly gaining the reputation as a game-changer.

MORGAN METZGER, Grand Blanc sr. D/M (Valparaiso): Another solid player in the central midfield for the preseason No. 1 Bobcats, Metzger is a playmaker (21 assists and nine goals last season). She led Grand Blanc to a state final appearance in 2015 and 2017 and is one of the main go-to players for a team favored to win its first state title this season.

DARLINE RADAMAKER, Utica Ford sr. M/F (Grand Valley State): Ford benefitted with Radamaker returning after six months with the Nationals Union Academy. She’s a quick, savvy, technically-superior player who gained some exposure by playing on and off with the Haitian National Team the past couple of years. Radamaker was part of a national club championship with the Michigan Gators in 2016 and, in high school, she earned All-State Second Team honors last season. Ford reached a D-1 semifinal last season. Radamaker is a former ODP Midwest Region II player.

RACHEL RASINS, Flint Powers jr. F (Columbia): The story behind Rasins isn’t necessarily the totals she collected last season (32 goals, 14 assists), but it’s the quality. She scored numerous game-winners for the D-3 state champion Chargers. Powers also finished as the state runner-up two years ago. Rasins is a clutch player with a strong work ethic and is a pure goal scorer. She was All-State First Team last season and continues to improve.

ALANA RICHMOND, Portage Central jr. F (Western Michigan): For a team that logged the whole season in the D-1 top 20 last season, Richmond led the Mustangs in scoring (19 goals), had seven assists and was selected All-State. Extremely quick with excellent 1-on-1 skills, Richmond has a knack for the goal and is a clutch performer, getting a foot on goals in big games.

ELLE ROGERS Walled Lake Northern soph. F (Michigan State): Another big-time talent in Michigan’s deep sophomore class, Rogers earned D-1 All-State Honorable Mention honors after recording 13 goals and 15 assists. She’s a handful to mark, as she possesses speed and the ability to strike from distance.

MACKENZIE REUBER, Macomb Lutheran North sr. M (Bowling Green): A knee injury sidelined Reuber for much of the 2017 season. Now she is back to take charge. Reuber defected from her Nationals Union Academy in March to try to lead her school to a D-3 state title. The Mustangs reached the semifinals last year. She was All-State First Team two years ago and entered the season with 43 goals and 32 assists in a little more than two seasons at this level. Reuber possesses a unique blend of speed, technical ability and field awareness that makes her difficult to play against.

CLAUDIA SCHILLING, Birmingham Marian sr. M (Western Michigan): Schilling is another player who isn’t flashy, but simply gets the job done as a holding midfielder. She is solid defensively and quick in transition to fuel the Mustangs’ offense. Schilling was D-2 All-State Third Team last season for a team that captured its second undefeated season and fifth state title.

FAITH WEBBER, Grand Blanc soph. F (Michigan State): One of several players who opted out of Academy ball in March, Webber is a scorer who has the wheels of the energizer bunny up top for the loaded Bobcats. As a true finisher around the net, Webber had 25 goals and nine assists and was named to the All-KLAA and all-district teams for the D-1 state runner-up Bobcats. Always working at a high pace, Webber is far from her ceiling and is slated for bigger things.

HAILEY WENTZLOFF, Rochester Adams sr. M (Grand Valley State): A fourth-year starter in the midfield, Wentzloff is off to D-II national powerhouse Grand Valley. She is the consummate attacking midfielder and a proven winner with more than 30 career goals and 40 career assists. She is a three-time All-OAA Red Division selection and all-district player. She earned D-1 All-State Third Team honors last season for a team that won a league championship. She has captured two state cups in her club career with the Michigan Lightning.

KENNEDY WHITE, Plymouth jr. F/M: (uncommitted): Plymouth had one of its best seasons last spring and White had a breakout season scoring 26 goals for a squad that reached a D-1 regional final. White is garnering plenty of D-I and D-II interest and is the type of player who can change the game with a swift strike. She was All-State First Team as a sophomore.

REAGAN WISSER, Richland Gull Lake jr. M/F (Western Michigan): The reigning Kalamazoo-area Player of the Year, Wisser is set to lead the Blue Devils to another top-10 season in D-2. Named All-State First Team last season, Wisser had 23 goals and 13 assists. She is the type of player that is dangerous whenever she touches the ball, either creating or finishing opportunities.

DANIELLE WOLFE, Walled Lake Northern jr. M/F (Michigan): Big, strong, fast and a big-time finisher, Wolfe had no interest going the Developmental Academy route. She opted instead to play for the Michigan Jaguars club and her high school. Regardless, she’s one of Michigan’s overall top talents, currently in the U-17 national pool as a top-50 prospect. She collected 53 goals and 33 assists the first two years and was named to the D-1 All-State First Team as a sophomore.

HANNAH SWANSON, Brighton sr.: As Brighton chases its first state title, Swanson is the last link in a chain of fine players. She allowed only 14 goals in a challenging 21-game schedule last season. Swanson was All-State Honorable Mention in 2017 who has posted 26 career shutouts.

EMMA YODER, Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central sr. (Slippery Rock): Yoder was in net for last year’s unbeaten and D-1 state championship run and will be heavily counted on this season as the Rangers’ top player. She makes difficult saves look routine and does not allow weak shots past her.
