Walled Lake – An era is over at Walled Lake Western.

Longtime football coach Mike Zdebski resigned last week and is planning on going to Arizona to continue his coaching teaching career.

Zdebski, 52, guided Western to the Division 2 final in 2016 and to the semifinals in ’11 and ’15. Zdebski built one of the more consistent programs, not only in the Detroit area but throughout the state for the past 20 seasons.

He coached for 30 seasons at Western, the last 20 as head coach. Zdebski’s career record is 160-59 and includes a Division 1 state title in 1999.

Zdebski said after 30 years teaching and coaching in Walled Lake that it was time to move on. He said will continue coaching and teaching at Hamilton High located in Chandler (AZ), which is located near Phoenix.

Western qualified for the playoffs the last eight seasons and 14 of the last 15 seasons. Lowell eliminated Western in the semifinals in ’11 and ’15. Western earned some revenge as it eliminated Lowell in the 2016 semifinals.
