Nate Boleware’s 4 Touchdowns Propel East English Village Prep To 50-8 Win

DETROIT – Detroit East English Village Prep captured their first win of the season Friday afternoon, after getting off to an 0-2 start. The Bulldogs got huge 50-8 victory over Detroit Frederick Douglass, and the win was a much needed boost for the team’s morale.

"I thought we played hard, and we had to get back on track", said head coach Rod Oden. "We had a rough couple of games coming out, and we also had some internal things to handle. We had about 10 or 11 new starters out here this week, just trying to prove a point to some guys that they’d have to give a better commitment."

One player who wasn’t new to the lineup was running back Nate Boleware. At just 5-5, Boleware will always seemingly be the smallest player on the field, but has a much bigger game. Boleware had a big day, rushing for 167 yards, and four touchdowns.

After Frederick Douglass scored it’s only points of the game on a 15-yard touchdown run by Joshua Davis late in the first quarter, Boleware, and East English Village Prep took over the game in the second, and never looked back. On the first play on the second quarter, Boleware took a handoff 57-yards to the house, eluding several defenders along the way. A successful two-point conversion would tie things at 8-8 all.

Frederick Douglass (0-2) played well in the first quarter, holding East English Village Prep scoreless, but let the game late in the second. The Bulldogs reeled off 26 points in the final 4:49 just before the half. Boleware would score three of his four touchdowns in the span, from 2, 3 and 15-yards out. Frederick Douglass fumbled twice on offense, and fumbled two more punt attempts, all leading to scores.

"Patience, listening to my coaches and hitting my holes allowed for my big day" Boleware said. "We need to keep our winning streak going, because we play a really good coached team this upcoming week."

East English Village Prep (1-2) wasn’t done either with their scoring assault in the second quarter. Already up 28-8, Frederick Douglass’ punter fumbled the snap, and senior Rico Lewis took it in from 40-yards to increase their lead to 36-8 at halftime.

"I thought the guys we played today, played hard, and the great thing about this team, is that we’re young," Oden said. "From start to finish, my guys played with some adversity, but I’m glad we can out with the win."

A scoreless third quarter left the game tied at 36-8, but East English Village Prep put the game further out of reach with two more touchdowns in the fourth. Joshua Thomas made it 42-8 with a touchdown from 2-yards out, and on the next possession, quarterback Armani Posey through a strike to receiver Brian Rivers from 30-yards out to seal the 50-8 victory with 2:36 remaining.

"This win gives us momentum, and we have to take it one step at a time", Oden added. "It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and it gets the bad taste from the first two weeks out of our mouths, and moving in the right direction."
