Onekama blows past Brethren, tournament play next

Onekama – Senior night didn’t go as planned but Onekama coach Nathan Bradford still had a number of reasons to smile on Friday.
Seniors Caleb Wisniski and Jon Acton did not start due to disciplinary reasons but it mattered little as the Portagers ran past Brethren 53-22 in a West Michigan D League game at Onekama.
Onekama, league champions for the second consecutive season, ended the regular season 17-2.
Brethren (12-6, 8-6) has two league games remaining before the start of the Class D tournament on March 7.
“We were out of sync big time,” Bradford said. “We’ve been clicking pretty good lately. We’ve been working hard on defense. I didn’t know if I should put on the press right away when (Wisniski and Acton) came in. It worked out OK.”
Onekama led 12-9 at the end of the first quarter. Wisniski and Acton started the second and the Portagers took off. They led 25-15 at halftime and 30-15 at the end of three quarters.
“They went out and ran with it,” Bradford said.
Acton led Onekama with 12 points and senior point guard Randy Pienta added 11. Junior forward Joseph McCarthy had eight points and 11 rebounds. Wisniski and sophomore Jacob Mauntler each added seven points.
Devyn Holbrook led Brethren with nine points.
Onekama, which has been ranked in State Champs’ top 10, will face Fife Lake Forest Area in a district semifinal on March 9 at Mesick.
