Our Michigan Helmet Challenge winner is …

By: MATTHEW B. MOWERY, June 1, 2020, 7:05 pm

After 65 head-to-head contests, six rounds of action and nearly 48,000 total votes cast over the last two weeks, we have a winner.

Livonia Franklin defeated Troy, by a margin of 50.1 to 49.1 percent of 2,873 total votes, and now moves on to the national helmet challenge tournament later this month. The championship battle was tied for fourth-closest voting in the entire contest.

Congratulations to both teams, and thank you to everyone for participating, and making it a good way to keep our minds off more dire events in the world.

Through the semifinals, the Patriots had 2,946 votes cast for their helmets, while the Colts had 2,981. Troy’s edging of Lake Orion — 50.9 percent of 1,845 — in the semifinals was both the highest vote total prior to the finals and the fourth-closest result, behind first-round matchups between Madison Heights Bishop Foley and Williamston (50.1 to 49.9), Livoia Churchill and Allen Park (50.5 to 49.4) and Warren Woods Tower vs. Romulus Summit Academy (50.6 to 49.4).
