Prep showcases highlight first weekend of the boys basketball season

Detroit – The Horatio Williams Tip-Off Classic will again be held at Detroit Edison, located in the Eastern Market area on Saturday.

The action beings with Detroit Cass Tech and new coach Steve Hall taking on River Rouge at noon. Next will be one of the better games on the bill, No. 8-ranked Detroit Renaissance facing No. 17 Edison. At approximately 3:45 Detroit Pershing will take on last season’s Class A finalist Saginaw Arthur Hill. No. 4-ranked Detroit East English Village Prep will take on defending Class A champion Flint Beecher at 5:45 and the nightcap features defending Class A champion Detroit Western against No. 7-ranked Kalamazoo Central.  

Tickets are $10.

The 4th annual Winter Breakout will be held at Whitmore Lake on Saturday and some of the top players competing in this event include Wayne Memorial junior wing Keion Epps (Eastern Michigan commit), Detroit Loyola sophomore point guard PJ Mitchell (Central Michigan commit), New Haven senior centers Innocent Nwoko (Central Michigan) and Jerry Ben (Cornell), and Ypsilanti Lincoln senior forward Ty Groce (Northeastern).

   Wayne Memorial will play Howell at 2:30 followed by Grand Rapids Union against Detroit Loyola at 4:15. At 6 p.m. Ypsilanti Lincoln will face New Haven and the nightcap features Detroit Cornerstone against Ann Arbor Pioneer.

The Oakland Invitational will be held at North Farmington on Saturday and here’s the lineup.

Waterford Mott will play Franklin Road at 1:45 p.m. followed by Southfield Christian against West Bloomfield. At approximately 5:15 Orchard Lake St. Mary’s will play Oxford followed by Detroit Allen Academy against Southfield. The nightcap features No. 3-ranked North Farmington against last season’s Class B finalist Detroit Henry Ford.
