Port Huron High School Senior Named Mr. Football 2012

Mark Chapman, standout quarterback at Port Huron High School in Port Huron, Michigan, has earned the 2012 metroPCS Mr. Football Award, honoring the state’s best high school football player.

Chapman received nearly half of the record 600,000 plus votes cast for the award. Viewers of STATE CHAMPS! High School Sports Show, which oversaw the voting and broadcast regular updates over the 12-week voting period, comprised the majority of voters. This is the fifth consecutive year that MetroPCS and STATE CHAMPS! have sponsored the Mr. Football Award.

Online voting results account for 20% of the metrics determining the award. A panel of writers and judges also evaluates performance throughout the season (30%), level of competition (20%), big game performance (15%), team success (10%), and being a highly recruited athlete (5%) when considering Mr. Football candidates.

“MetroPCS was overjoyed to be a part of presenting Mark Chapman the 2012 Mr. Football award,” said Jason Jones, Director of Advertising and PR for MetroPCS Michigan. “After meeting Mark, it was clear that he is not only a superstar on the field, but an MVP in life. We wish him all the best and congratulate Mark, his family, and Port Huron High school.”

At quarterback for the Big Reds, Chapman ran for 1,554 yards on 181 carries with 25 touchdowns.  He also threw for 989 yards completing 71 of 133 passes with 7 touchdowns.  He threw just 1 interception in 10 games.  The Big Reds finished the year 7-3, winning the Macomb Area Conference White Division championship. They were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by eventual state champion Birmingham Brother Rice.

Chapman’s other honors for the season include MAC White MVP, Detroit News Dream Team, Associated Press Division 1-2 First-Team All-State, and First-Team All-Metro East.

He has verbally committed to play at Central Michigan University, where he was recruited as a receiver. He will join his brother, Jarret, a sophomore starting defensive back, and his cousin, Winslow, a freshman defensive back.

Other finalists for the 2012 MetroPCS Mr. Football award included: Ben Dreslinski (Tecumseh High School), Desmond King (East English Village Prep Academy) and Jon Reschke (Birmingham Brother Rice High School).
