PSL Power: The overall talent in the Detroit PSL is alive and well
Recently, the Detroit Public School League has gotten the reputation of not having enough parity among its football teams, which may be true. But as the saying goes, quality is better than quantity. Year in and year out, the PSL produces some of the top football players in the state, and it’s almost no competition.
It’s no different this year either, as the PSL had a big day on yesterday, recruiting wise. Senior linebacker Tyriq Thompson of Detroit King gave his commitment to the Michigan State Spartans, joining teammate Kyonta Stallworth, who committed in December.
A few hours late, arguably the top player in the entire state, running back Mike Weber, kept the Detroit Cass Tech to michigan pipeline going strong, tweeting that he plans on being a Wolverine. Webber’s best friend on the Cass Tech football team is defensive end Josh Alabi. He’s committed to Ohio State, which will make for a storyline once they go off to their respective schools, considering the rivalry between the Wolverines, and Buckeyes.
Thompson, Stallworth, Weber, and Alabi were all sought after recruits around the country, and they all play for two schools, in one league. They’re the best the city has to offer in football, and are top ten players in the state. No other league in the state can say that they have players of their caliber.
Despite his recent legal issues, Cass Tech senior quarterback Jayru Campbell is also one of the top signal-callers in Michigan, and will play at the next level once his issues are resolved. Western International has a vey good running back in Romello Ross, who’s committed to Central Michigan.
East English Village Prep senior quarterback Anton Curtis is committed to Western Michigan as a wide receiver, and they have a lot of players in their program that are flying under the radar. Same goes for Denby, Renaissance, Cody, Northwestern, and Mumford, who may not have the best teams, but have a few quality players.
The talent level in the PSL is also in great hands with the underclassmen. Cass Tech always has elite players, and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Defensive back LaVert Hill, two-way lineman Mike Onwenu, and wide receiver Demetric Vance are all tops players in the class of 2016, and hold offers. 2017 wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones will be a national recruit soon, and sophomore defensive back Donovan Johnson is a name to remember. Freshman Kalon Gervin will be special as well.
A few miles down the road at King, they also have a loaded junior class, with defensive backs Jesse Johnson, and Dontre Boyd, who both hold Toledo offers. Defensive end Leon Page, and quarterback Mikale Washington are also rising juniors in the state. Wide receiver Donnie Corley will also be one to keep a close eye on, after transferring in from Wyandotte. He has six offers himself, and is originally from the city.
East English Village Prep has a strong junior class as well, with running back Nate Boleware, athletes Armani Posey, and Malik Lewis, and wide receiver Lindrell Mitchell, to name a few. You’ll be hearing their names more sooner than later. Sophomore lineman Emani Mason also has the potential to be big-time, at 6-4, 260-pounds already.
Those three schools dominate the talent pool in the city, which is why they are the three premier programs in the city. Their players will be more publicized than the rest of the schools, but that doesn’t mean that talent can’t be found at Mumford, Cody, or Denby. You just have to come down here and see it.
