Boys Hockey Rankings: Brother Rice is No. 3 and the team to beat in Division 2
1. Flint Powers. The Chargers stay at the top spot by virtue of their 13-0 record in State. The class of division 3 have two tough tests looming in early February at the MIHL Showcase in Trenton, as they drew #3 Brother Rice and #13 Livonia Stevenson.
2. Hartland. The Eagles are 14-1 and look to be the team to beat in Division 2. Coach Rick Gadwa’s squad has outscored their opponents by a whopping 51-3 in its current 7-game winning streak.
3. Birmingham Brother Rice. The Warriors are 13-3 and one of quite a few serious threats in Division 2. The current 4-game win streak includes wins over Rochester United, Detroit Catholic Central, and a two game sweep up north over Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie.
4. Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central. The Rangers (16-1-1) have won 11 games straight. Coach Kevin Zaschak’s squad has two big tests later this week at the Public School Showcase with Northville and Plymouth scheduled.
5. Detroit Catholic Central. The Shamrocks are still the team to beat in Division 1 at 8-2-1 in state, and a big week ahead with Trenton, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood and Brighton on the slate.
6. Brighton. The Bulldogs (14-2) host Detroit Catholic Central on Saturday in a battle of Division 1 titans.
7. Orchard Lake St Mary’s. The Eaglets remain a real threat in Division 1 and have been playing their best hockey as of late, riding a 7-game winning streak where they have outscored opponents, 39-11.
8. Warren De La Salle. The Pilots are a serious threat in Division 3 as well, and boast a 10-3-1 record after a 2-0 victory over Cranbrook on Saturday. Coach Craig Staskowski is making a pitch for coach of the year honors.
9. Livonia Churchill. The Chargers are 11-3 in Division 2 and have an opportunity to make a bigger statement this week with games against Northville, Hartland and Troy.
10. Grosse Pointe South. Coach Robert McKillop has his Blue Devils playing well (11-3-1) and the fourth Division 2 team in our top ten.
11. Calumet. The Copper Kings started the season with 4 straight losses, but have gone 9-1-1 since, including six straight wins.
12. Hancock. The defending Division 3 state champs are 11-4 and have a big test at the MIHL Showcase in early February as they drew Division 2 giants Livonia Stevenson and Brother Rice.
13. Livonia Stevenson. The Spartans sit at 10-6, and the schedule is brutal leading up to the playoffs with seven games against teams in our top 12.
14. Plymouth. The Wildcats sit at 11-3-1 and capable of a long run in Division 2. Two games to watch at the Public School Showcase in Chelsea this week are Plymouth-Forest Hills Central and Plymouth-Troy.
15. Northville. The Mustangs are 10-5 and Coach Clint Robert’s squad have a big week looming with matches against Livonia Churchill, Forest Hills Central and Lake Orion.
16. Trenton. The Trojans (8-6-1) are coming off an impressive 4-0 win over Livonia Stevenson where goaltender Anthony Lemerand stopped 35 shots to earn the shutout.
17. Saginaw Heritage. The Hawks improved to 11-3 since our last rankings, going 2-0 in that span while scoring 16 goals.
18. Marquette. The Redmen earn their way into the top 25 with a 7-1 mark in its last 8 games. Yet another potential mine in the deep Division 2 ranks.
19. Allen Park. The Jags remain in our top 25 after going 2-2 since our last ranking, and sitting at 13-3-1 overall.
20. East Grand Rapids. The Pioneers move up a couple spots as they boast a 13-3 record, and the three losses have all been by a single goal.
21. Lake Orion. The Dragons are 10-3-2 on the season, and riding a 5 game unbeaten streak at 3-0-2. Coach Nick Field continues to do a fine job in Division 1.
22. Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard. Coach Rick Huetter and his Irish are 12-2 overall with 10 straight wins.
23. Utica Eisenhower. The Eagles enter the top 25 with a 6-game win streak, as coach Bob Hall has his team playing at a high level at the right time.
24. Novi. The Wildcats sit at 9-5-2 and are coming off a 4-3 win over Livonia Churchill.
25. Troy. The Colts are at 10-2-1 in Division 1, and two intriguing match-ups this week at the Public School showcase with Plymouth and Livonia Churchill
