GIRLS BASKETBALL RANKINGS: Frankenmuth on cusp of top 10 after win over Dow, Divine Child solidifies top-10 status
Sometimes, you find out as much about teams when they are short-handed as when they’re at full strength. The preseason top 25 was impacted by knee injuries to a pair of Division I-bound stars, but their teams have stayed afloat without them, for the most part. Without Lexus Bargesser, defending D3 champ Grass Lake lost to Hudsonville (No. 4), Midland Dow (No. 7) and Parma Western (No. 9), but has clung to a spot in the top 25 by beating everyone they should. Frankenmuth lost Lexi Boyke, and lost to No. 3 Ypsilanti Arbor Prep at the Roundball Classic to end 2021, but has gone 4-0 so far in 2022, with wins over nemesis Freeland, as well as last week’s three-point OT win over Dow, the D1 semifinalist from a year ago. And Birmingham Marian — minus three injured starters — managed to keep their home rematch against No. 8 Dearborn Divine Child a three-point loss. Other teams — notably No. 1 Edison and No. 20 Country Day — have struggled just to get on the court and play, for a variety of reasons.
