Michigan 8-player top 10 football rankings after Week 8 of 2019: A new No. 1, and Gaylord St. Mary forfeits shake up top 10

By: MATTHEW B. MOWERY, October 22, 2019, 2:39 pm

Very rarely does the result of one game knock BOTH teams out of the rankings, but here we are. After Gaylord St. Mary had to forfeit five games earlier in the week — with their only remaining wins coming from a pair of opponents’ forfeits — the Snowbirds suddenly found themselves dropping from 6-1 to 2-5 with two weeks left in the season, and their postseason hopes suddenly dashed. Back on the field on Saturday night, they took out that frustration on a Mio team they’d already beaten once — a 42-38 victory in Week 2 erased by the forfeiture — winning again, 65-28.

Mio, which had gone from a one-loss team back to an unbeaten one with the St. Mary forfeit, went back to a one-loss squad again. Suttons Bay, which had lost 48-47 to St. Mary on Oct. 4, is now one of the six remaining unbeaten in 8-player football.

Those ranks lost another member over the weekend, as No. 1-ranked Morrice, looking for a makeup opponent after a forfeit by Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart, played a 6-2 Crystal Falls Forest Park squad at Pickford, and a 22-14 loss snapped the Orioles’ regular-season win streak at 14 games.

After the shakeup, there’s a new No. 1 atop the 8-player rankings for Week 9:

1 Powers North Central (8-0) — Beat Carney-Nadeau, 68-8. (Last ranking: 2) Up next: home vs. HM Engadine.
