STATE CHAMPS! Top 25 Hockey Rankings – Week of 12/12/22

Here are the top 25 teams in Michigan, as of the week of December 12, 2022:

1 Detroit Catholic Central (Division 1)

There is no substitute for speed in the game of hockey, and this team can fly. The Shamrocks are 7-0 against in-state opponents, outscoring them by a combined 44-4. Keep an eye on #25 Landon West who is off to a fantastic start.

2 Houghton (Division 3)

The Gremlins are off to a perfect 6-0 start, and outscoring opponents 37-7. Keep an eye on #9 Camden Markham, who is averaging about 2 points a game to start this campaign.

3 Byron Center (Division 2)

The Bulldogs are off to a 9-0 start that has them outscoring opponents 50-9. Coach Jordan Steger has a talented squad capable of going all the way in the revamped division 2 ranks. Keep an eye on #23 Logan Nickolaus.

4 Trenton (Division 2)

The Trojans have won 5 straight and hold an impressive 6-1 record considering the tough slate they play. Keep an eye on goaltender #31 Noah Miklos.

Grosse Pointe South (Division 2)

The Blue Devils are off to a 6-1 start, and are riding a 4 game winning streak after a thrilling 4-3 win over Livonia Churchill. Keep an eye on #3 Brendan Polek.

6 Livonia Stevenson (Division 1)

The Spartans are off to a 6-1 in-state record, and had arguably the game of the day in Livonia in the 4-3 loss to Trenton. Keep an eye on #9 Own Penny.

7 Flint Powers (Division 3)

The Chargers are off to a 6-1 start, and are dangerous yet again under Coach Travis Perry. Keep an eye on #25 Mason Czarnecki up front.

8 U of D Jesuit (Division 2)

The Cubs are off to a 4-2 start in the toughest conference in MHSAA hockey, the MIHL. Keep an eye on #15 Michael Shubeck.

9 Hartland (Division 1)

The Eagles have won 6 straight and play one of the toughest schedules in the state. Keep an eye on #11 Ben Pouliot.

10 Brighton (Division 1)

Coach Kurt Kivisto and the Bulldogs are off to a 6-3 start, and gave might Catholic Central all they could handle in a 2-1 loss. Keep an eye on #16 Cameron Duffany.

11 Muskegon Mona Shores (Division 1)

The Sailors are once again a team to be reckoned with, and off to a 5-2 start. Keep an eye on #11 Trent Benedict.

12 Clarkston (Division 1)

The Wolves are unbeaten to start the 2022-2023 campaign and have nice wins over perennial solid teams in Salem and Detroit Country Day, Keep an eye on #32 Goaltender Calum Hartner.

13 Marquette (Division 2)

The Redmen are riding a 6 game unbeaten streak at 5-0-1, and play a tough schedule that should get them ready for the tough D-2 playoffs. Keep an eye on #24 Jake Garrow.

14 Bay Reps (Division 3)

The Reps are off to a 5-1-2 start and playing everybody across the state to get ready for the D-3 playoffs. Keep an eye on #1 Goaltender Aiden Reamer.

15 Brother Rice (Division 2)

The Warriors have a young team that is only going to get better as the season progresses, Keep an eye on the dynamic duo  #13 Andrew Marone and #10 Peter Rosa.

16 Orchard Lake Saint Mary’s (Division 3)

The Eaglets are once again a serious threat in D-3, and had an impressive 6-3 win over a good Howell squad. Keep an eye on #6 Brendan Kelly.

17 Alpena (Division 2)

The Wildcats are off to a 5-2 start, and coming off a nice win over Riverview Gabriel Richard in Gaylord. A huge Big North showdown is looming with Cadillac. Keep an eye on #20 Harrison Kaszubowski.

18 Cadillac (Division 3)

The Vikings are unbeaten and have an opportunity to make an even  bigger statement when they travel to Alpena Friday. Keep an eye on #1 Dylan Quartz.

19 Forest Hills Northern-Eastern (Division 3)

The Birddogs are off to a 5-1-1 start, and another quality team from the OK Conference. Keep an eye on #35 Caleb Woolery.

20 Saginaw Heritage (Division 2)

Coach JJ Bamberger has adopted an “anybody, anywhere” approach to scheduling, always making the Hawks a tough out at playoff time. Keep an eye on the Hawks deep defense corps.

21 Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard/Greenhills (Division 3)

Coach Clint Robert has the Irish off to a 5-1 start, and they have a big Metro league showdown looming with a solid Grosse Ile squad. Keep an eye on #18 Jack Lapinski.

22 Riverview Gabriel Richard (Division 3)

The Pioneers continue to play one of the toughest out of conference schedules in the state, and will have another big test on Wednesday when they take on Trenton. Keep an eye on #35 Ryan Rainey.

23 Livonia Churchill (Division 2)

Coach Jason Reynolds has the Chargers off to a 6-3 start, and had a fantastic game in Livonia on Saturday falling to Grosse Pointe South 4-3. Keep an eye on #35 Ryan Price.

24 Grand Rapids Catholic Central (Division 3)

The Cougars are off to a 6-3 start, and are certainly in the mix in the loaded D-3 ranks. Keep an eye on #31 Trent Goheen.

25 Lakeland (Division 2)

The Eagles are off to a hot 6-0 start to set the pace in the Lakes Valley Conference. Keep an eye on #11 Luke Weinberger.
