Top 25 HS Football Teams: King takes over top spot; Livonia Stevenson and Pioneer make first appearance

- Detroit King (5-0), A: Through the first four games the Crusaders’ defense carried the team. Last week the offense, led by running back Martell Pettaway and a timely kick, began to click in a 31-28 overtime victory over Detroit Cass Tech. The next test for King will take place in week eight in the PSL semifinals.
- Saline (5-0), A: The Hornets waxed Ann Arbor Huron (0-5) 42-0 and now Saline will face Ann Arbor Pioneer (5-0) with the winner having the clear edge in the SEC Red Division race.
- Canton (5-0), A: The Chiefs won their last two games by a combined score of 104-7. Now we learn just how good they are as they travel to Livonia Churchill (3-2) followed by Plymouth (4-1).
- Warren De La Salle (4-1): A: The Pilots were at their best last Friday cruising pas previously top-ranked Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 31-8. Detroit Loyola (5-0) is next at Wayne State.
- Walled Lake Western (5-0), A: Western outlasted Waterford Mott, 33-21, and now host Walled Lake Northern (4-1) for the KLAA North Division title.
- Detroit Cass Tech (4-1), A: The Technicians let a 14-0 lead slip away and lost to King, 31-28. Next is Detroit English Village Prep (4-1) on Friday. The loser is out of the PSL playoffs.
- Detroit Catholic Central (4-1), A: C.C. ended a three-game losing streak to Brother Rice on Sunday defeating the Warriors, 35-7. Short week of practice for the Shamrocks as they face U-D Jesuit (4-1) on Friday.
- West Bloomfield (5-0), A: West Bloomfield’s defense came to the forefront on Friday against Lake Orion (27-0). The Lakers’ next three opponents are a combined 4-11.
- Muskegon (4-1), A: Muskegon had a chance to rest its starters last week (44-0 over Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills). Zeeland East (3-2) should provide more of a challenge this week.
- Lowell (4-1), A: The Red Arrows continue to play well on both sides as they defeated Grand Haven, 35-0. Lowell should breeze past its next two opponents before facing East Grand Rapids.
- Muskegon Mona Shores (5-0), A: The Sailors’ defense continues to sparkle (48-7 over Zeeland East last week). Muskegon Reeths-Puffer (3-2) could pose some resistance this week.
- Macomb Dakota (4-1), A: Dakota had an unexpectedly easy time disposing of Utica Eisenhower (48-21) last week. The Cougars are rolling and now host Romeo (5-0) in a MAC crossover.
- Clinton Township Chippewa Valley (4-1), A: The Big Reds showed grit in defeating Warren Mott, 34-30. Chippewa Valley trailed 23-12 before making its comeback. The defense (allowed 141 points) continues to be a concern.
- Midland (5-0), A: As expected the Chemics blew past Bay City Western (55-7). Now they return home to face Flint Carman-Ainsworth then Lapeer.
- Romeo (5-0), A: The Bulldogs whipped Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse, 41-0, and a Macomb County showdown at Dakota is next.
- Lapeer (5-0), A: The Lightning passed their first big test (35-14 victory over Mount Pleasant). They’ll have a chance to play their backups this week against Saginaw Arthur Hill (0-5).
- Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (4-1): St. Mary’s experienced a meltdown on Friday and its defense couldn’t stop the run when it had to and its offense was nonexistent for three quarters in a 31-8 loss to Warren De La Salle. On the bright side there are three games left in the regular season with which to right the ship.
- Warren Mott (4-1): The Marauders nearly pulled off another upset last week. Their 34-30 loss to Chippewa Valley has created a logjam atop the MAC Red Division standings. Port Huron is next before an important division game at Sterling Heights Stevenson (4-1).
- Brighton (5-0), A: The Bulldogs weren’t at their best last week (34-20 over winless Milford) but they’ll have to bring their ‘A’ game the next two weeks against Hartland (3-2) and Howell (4-1).
- Zeeland West (5-0), B: West crushed Hamilton, 58-12, on Friday and should have another easy time against Holland (1-4) this week.
- Portage Central (5-0), A: The Mustangs ran past Richland Gull Lake, 63-16, last week and shouldn’t have much trouble when they travel to Niles (1-4) this week.
- East Kentwood (4-1), A: It’s uncertain what took place last week in a 28-7 home loss to Jenison. Good teams are allowed one slip up. The Falcons just used that up. East Kentwood plays at Hudsonville (4-1) next.
- Farmington Hills Harrison (4-1), A: The Hawks continue their fine defensive play (defeated Southfield, 17-14) and now can take a big step toward a state playoff spot and the OAA White Division title this week against
- Livonia Stevenson (5-0), A: The Spartans have recorded consecutive shutouts and now face their toughest test as they host Northville (5-0) on Friday.
- Ann Arbor Pioneer (5-0), A: The Pioneers won a huge game last week (20-12 over Monroe). Now they face Saline in a game that will decide the SEC Red Division champion.
