Top 25 HS Football Teams: St. Mary’s keeps top spot; Cass Tech and King in top four

- Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (1-0): Defeated Detroit Loyola 24-12 on Saturday. The Eaglets were not overly impressive but its defense did play well. Will play at Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy before going to Mishawaka (IN) Penn on Sept. 11.
- Detroit Cass Tech (1-0), A: Defeated Southfield 27-0 last Saturday and will face Detroit Cody (0-1) on Friday. Defensively the Technicians are tenacious.
- Clinton Township Chippewa Valley (1-0), A: Defensively the Big Reds still have a few holes (35-28 victory last week over Lake Orion). Patchwork must be done quickly as they travel to Macomb Dakota on Thursday.
- Detroit King (1-0), A: The Crusaders stymied Warren De La Salle (12-10) with a pounding defense. The offense needs to jell. A breather this week against Detroit Western.
- Canton (1-0), A: Canton gave up a couple of big plays last week (42-25) but overall the Chiefs played well. Hartland (1-0) could provide more of a test this week.
- Saline (1-0), A: The Hornets passed their first test (37-24) rather impressively. Saline could run the table and enter the playoffs 8-0.
- Macomb Dakota (1-0), A: Not much went wrong for the Cougars in their opener (35-10 over Clarkston). We’ll see if that momentum carries over this week against Chippewa Valley.
- Detroit Catholic Central (1-0), A: Last Friday’s 15-12 victory over Muskegon has this team pumped up. The Shamrocks host Toledo Whitmer this week.
- East Kentwood (1-0), A: The Falcons had to pull one out of the fire late at Farmington Hills Harrison (35-28). Quarterback Evan Maday showed poise in his first start. The Falcons should have an easier time this week against East Lansing.
- Hudsonville (1-0), A: The Eagles spotted Holt an early lead before coming back to win, 28-14. Hudsonville should be 3-0 when it faces Grand Haven (1-0).
- Walled Lake Western (1-0), A: The Warriors showed poise in the second half as they came back to defeat Lowell, 42-40. Quarterback Kyle Thomas is making people take notice. The next few games should be no trouble for Western beginning with Salem (1-0).
- West Bloomfield (1-0), A: The Lakers had one of the top offenses last season and quarterback Trishton Jackson has them scoring (59-31 over Dearborn) seemingly at will again. The Lakers are at Troy (0-1) this week before hosting Clarkston the next.
- Muskegon (0-1), A: The Big Reds found out how difficult it is to win at Detroit C.C. Expect a big improvement offensively this week when they play Grand Rapids Christian.
- Lowell (0-1), A: Defensively the Red Arrows appeared tired in the last 14 minutes against W.L. Western. Coach Noel Dean will have his team ready this week when they face Chicago Hubbard.
- Mount Pleasant (1-0), A: The Oilers took care of one of the better teams (Midland Dow, 34-20) in the Saginaw Valley last week. Flint Carman-Ainsworth should provide some competition this week.
- Midland (1-0), A: The Chemics had a great start last week (42-11 over Traverse City West) after last season’s sub-.500 record. Midland should be 3-0 when it faces Mount Pleasant.
- Muskegon Mona Shores (1-0), A: The Sailors picked up right where they let off last season as they whipped Holland West Ottawa, 55-0. Mona Shores should have little trouble this week against Fruitport before facing Rockford.
- Detroit East English Village Prep (1-0), A: East English showed last week (56-20 over Walled Lake Central) that Cass Tech and King aren’t the only good teams in the PSL. Tough games (Detroit Renaissance, Detroit King) the next two weeks.
- Warren De La Salle (0-1): A: The Pilots need to find answers offensively. Their defense is fine. Should be easy wins (two teams from Windsor) the next two weeks before the Pilots face Birmingham Brother Rice.
- Romeo (1-0), A: It wasn’t surprising that Romeo beat Oxford, but the score (47-0) was. Play in the MAC White begins this week against Grosse Pointe South.
- Lapeer (1-0), A: Rochester (48-0) proved to be a pushover. The Lightning should be 4-0 when it takes on Mount Pleasant.
- Howell (1-0), A: Defeating Monroe 28-14 was a good win for Howell and its league (KLAA). It should be a breeze this week against Westland John Glenn (0-1).
- Allen Park, (1-0), A: Easy street just ended (54-0 over Taylor Kennedy) for Allen Park. The Jaguars face perennial Downriver League power Wyandotte Roosevelt (1-0) next.
- Caledonia (1-0), A: After defeating Battle Creek Harper Creek, 41-3, Caledonia’s schedule will be more competitive in two weeks when it faces East Grand Rapids.
- Zeeland West (1-0), B: West outlasted a good Oak Park team, 42-34, last Saturday and will have a short week to prepare for Swartz Creek on Thursday.
