Top 25 HS Football Teams: St. Mary’s strengthens hold on top spot, Warren Mott vaults into top 20 after upset of Dakota

- Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (3-0): The Eaglets passed their first big test when they defeated Mishawaka (IN) Penn 24-21. Josh Ross had 12 tackles to lead the defense. On Friday the Eaglets open Catholic League Central Division play against U-D Jesuit (3-0).
- Detroit Cass Tech (3-0), A: The Technicians have yet to be tested. They defeated Detroit Mumford, 42-9, on Friday and have outscored their opponents 116-15. Cass Tech plays Detroit Renaissance next.
- Detroit King (3-0), A: The Crusaders overcame a plethora of penalties and two interceptions to defeat Detroit East English Village Prep 20-15 in the first big PSL matchup of the season. King hosts Detorit Denby next before facing Cass Tech (Sept. 26).
- Saline (3-0), A: The showdown at Ann Arbor Skyline last Friday never materialized as the Hornets won decisively, 45-6. One must wonder if any team in the SEC can challenge Saline. The Hornets play at Temperance Bedford (0-3) next.
- Canton (3-0), A: For the second consecutive week the Chiefs survived a close encounter. Two weeks ago it was (27-21). Last Friday the challenger was Livonia Franklin. Canton defeated the Patriots 27-17. Next up for the Chiefs is Wayne Memorial (0-3).
- East Kentwood (3-0), A: The Falcons ran past Grand Rapids Union, 57-15, and shouldn’t be tested until it travels to Hudsonville (2-1) on Oct. 2.
- Walled Lake Western (3-0), A: The Warriors blew past Waterford Kettering 44-0 and it appears no team in the KLAA North can handle this team. Western hosts White Lake Lakeland next.
- Detroit Catholic Central (2-1), A: The Shamrocks handled Toronto St. Michaels with ease (). Before opening the Catholic League Central Division schedule the Shamrocks have one more cupcake – Detroit Delta Prep Academy.
- West Bloomfield (3-0), A: Those waiting for the Lakers’ bubble to burst against Clarkston must wait a while longer as West Bloomfield defeated the Wolves 35-21. But the Lakers must be aware of a possible letdown this week as they travel to Troy Athens (2-1).
- Muskegon (2-1), A: The Big Reds spanked a good Grandville team (39-12) and now plays at East Grand Rapids (3-0). Should the Big Reds beat the Pioneers they should be 6-1 when they face Muskegon Mona Shores.
- Lowell (2-1), A: The Red Arrows continue to improve (defeated Jenison, 55-21). Now they host an improved Muskegon Reeths-Puffer team (2-1).
- Muskegon Mona Shores (3-0), A: After two blowout wins the Sailors faced one of the top programs in the state in Rockford. Mona Shores spotted Rockford a 7-0 lead then defeated the Rams 31-10. No time to rest, however, as the Sailors play at Caledonia (2-1) next.
- Warren Mott (3-0): By far the biggest jump in the rankings were made by the Marauders. They shocked Macomb Dakota 32-27 and are suddenly alone in first place in the mighty MAC Red at 2-0. Mott gets a breather this week as they travel to St. Clair Shores Lakeview (0-3).
- Macomb Dakota (2-1), A: The Cougars trailed Warren Mott 20-0 at halftime before falling short, 32-27. Dakota desperately needs a win and it’ll get one this week against Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse (1-2).
- Clinton Township Chippewa Valley (2-1), A: For the third consecutive week the Big Reds gave up 28 points. But make no mistake, Chippewa Valley beat a good team (Sterling Heights Stevenson) last Friday, 32-28. No team in Macomb County has played a more adventurous schedule at this stage and Warren Cousino (3-0) is next.
- Mount Pleasant (3-0), A: The Oilers’ 38-20 victory over Saginaw Arthur Hill was a bit closer than many had anticipated. Friday’s home game against Midland (3-0) will answer many questions for both teams.
- Midland (3-0), A: The Chemics had little difficulty defeating Flint Northwestern (49-20). Now the big test: at Mount Pleasant.
- Warren De La Salle (2-1): A: The weak part of the Pilots’ schedule is over. They play Birmingham Brother Rice next, on Saturday, at Berkley.
- Romeo (3-0), A: The Bulldogs continue to play good defense (35-6 over Utica). Romeo plays Utica Ford (3-0) next on the road with first place in the MAC White on the line.
- Lapeer (3-0), A: The Lightning defeated Bay City Central, 45-7, and haven’t been tested. That first test will come at home against Mount Pleasant on Sept. 25.
- Howell (3-0), A: Howell played well in defeating Hartland (45-27) last week. This week the Highlanders host Pinckney (0-3) in what could be a trap game. Howell plays Grand Blanc (3-0) the following week.
- Zeeland West (3-0), B: West is averaging over 55 points after defeating Wayland Union, 51-6. This week Comstock Park (3-0) provides the competition.
- East Grand Rapids (3-0), B: The Pioneers got one of their biggest victories recently when they defeated a good Caledonia team, 35-28. Now it gets tougher as they host Muskegon.
- Brighton (3-0), A: The Bulldogs have shown promise with first-year coach Brian Lemons. They’ve given up 21 points this season and host Grand Blanc (3-0) in a KLAA West Division showdown on Friday.
- Zeeland East (3-0), A: After upsetting Hudsonville, East is in the midst of its most challenging stretch. Grand Rapids Christian (2-1) is next.
