WEEK 2 RANKINGS: Ferndale climbs into the boys basketball top 25, East Lansing is on the cusp of the top 10

Here are the STATE CHAMPS! boys basketball team rankings after Week 2 and one has to be thankful for the amount of quality games in this early season. East Lansing climbs to the cusp of the top 10, while Ferndale is welcomed into the top 25. 


1 Ann Arbor Huron (D1, 3-0, 3-0 SEC Red) 

Previous ranking: 1

How they fared: Beat Ypsilanti Community, 51-31; beat Monroe, 47-26.

Win over Monroe and delays in games vs. Pioneer and Skyline set the week back. Perhaps a game at Saline on Friday, Feb. 26, will happen.

2 Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (D1, 3-0, 1-0 CHSL Central) 

Previous ranking: 2

How they fared: Beat No. 4 Grand Blanc, 65-52.

Double-digit home wins over current No. 3 Grand Blanc and No. 24 Flint Beecher. Big game are on the slate for Orchard Lake St. Mary’s with home games vs. No. 4 Hamtramck on Tuesday and Detroit Henry Ford on Friday before hitting the road to No. 9 Warren De La Salle.

3 Grand Blanc (D1, 5-1, 4-0 SVL Blue) 

Previous ranking: 4

How they fared: Lost to No. 2 Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 65-52; beat No. 14 Muskegon, 71-53, beat Davison, 82-44.

The Bobcats have a test on the road vs. Saginaw on Thursday followed by a home game to round out the week vs. undefeated Saginaw Arthur Hill.

4 Hamtramck (D1, 5-0, 3-0 MMAC Blue) 

Previous ranking: 6

How they fared: Beat Taylor Trillium Academy, 94-53; beat No. 3 River Rouge, 62-56.

Tom Paciorek, where are you? The Cosmos went on the road to beat both Ecorse and River Rouge, and they’ll be back on the road Tuesday, against No. 2 Orchard Lake St. Mary’s is the game of the week, then stay on the road with a Wednesday game within the conference vs. Detroit University-Prep.

5 Grand Rapids Catholic Central (D2, 6-0, 5-0 OK Gold) 

Previous ranking: 9

How they fared: Beat Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills, 71-28; beat Cedar Springs, 78-16; get No. 7 Grand Rapids Christian, 59-44.

A Saturday night win vs. then-No. 5 Grand Rapids Christian moves GRCC into the top 5. The Cougars have upcoming games vs. Kenowa Hills, Wayland Union, and South Christian.

6 River Rouge (D1, 3-1, 1-1 MMAC Blue) 

Previous ranking: 3

How they fared: Beat Detroit University Prep, 66-30; lost to No. 6 Hamtramck, 62-56.

A win up North vs. Traverse City St. Francis and an inter-conference win vs. University Prep helped ease the sting of a home loss vs. then-No. 6 Hamtramck.

7 Zeeland East (D1, 6-0, 4-0 OK Green) 

Previous ranking: 8

How they fared: Beat Grand Rapids Union, 46-30; beat Muskegon Mona Shores, 68-40; beat Hudsonville Unity Christian, 59-51.

The zone, the zone, the zone. Zeeland East stays undefeated with three wins, and this week the Chix face Wyoming, rival Zeeland West, and No. 20 Muskegon.

8 Grand Rapids Christian (D2, 5-1, 4-1 OK White) 

Previous ranking: 7

How they fared: Beat Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central, 71-61; beat Grand Rapids Northview, 77-58; lost to No. 9 Grand Rapids Catholic Central, 59-44.

The loss to then-No. 9 Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Saturday bumped the Eagles down a few spots. Top 25 bubble team Forest Hills Northern, Lowell, and East Grand Rapids are on the clock.

9 Detroit King (D1, 3-0) 

Previous ranking: 5

How they fared: Beat Roseville, 61-39.

A spur of the moment home win vs. Roseville and this week they’ll face Goodrich, a top 25 bubble team, on Tuesday and a league game vs. East English Village on Friday.

10 Warren De La Salle (D1, 5-0, 3-0 CHSL Central) 

Previous ranking: 10

How they fared: Beat Detroit Renaissance, 85-43; beat Birmingham Detroit Country Day, 73-34.

Forty-point wins vs. Detroit Renaissance and Detroit Country Day and now a week on the road vs. always tough Okemos followed by No. 2 Orchard Lake St. Mary’s.

11 East Lansing (D1, 3-0, 3-0 OK Blue) 

Previous ranking: 15

How they fared: Beat Lansing Waverly, 77-59; beat Holt, 40-35.

After beating Holt and Waverly, this week the Trojans host Grand Ledge before road games at Lansing Everett and DeWitt.

12 North Farmington (D1, 4-0, 3-0 OAA Red) 

Previous ranking: 16

How they fared: Beat Farmington, 71-54; beat West Bloomfield, 50-39.

All double-digit wins this season with last week’s wins vs. rivals Farmington and West Bloomfield. They’ll travel to Farmington on Wednesday and host new top 25 member Ferndale (now No. 17) on Friday.

13 Detroit Cass Tech (D1, 6-0) 

Previous ranking: 12

How they fared: Beat Southfield A&T, 54-40; beat University Prep, 88-51; beat Eastpointe

Top 25 bubble team Clarkston hosts Cass with league games vs. Renaissance and Cody later in the week.

14 Detroit Edison (D2, 4-0, 3-0 CSC) 

Previous ranking: 17

How they fared: Beat Novi Detroit Catholic Central, 61-51; beat Southfield Bradford Academy, 78-41.

A win over Southfield Bradford and a postponed game vs. Grosse Pointe South this past week with Detroit Community, Michigan Collegiate, and Detroit Leadership Academy on the menu this week.

15 Flint Beecher (D3, 4-1, 2-0 GAC Red) 

Previous ranking: 24

How they fared: Beat Burton Bendle, 80-43; beat Flint New Standard Academy, 80-38.

16 University of Detroit Jesuit (D1, 3-0, 2-0 CHSL Central) 

Previous ranking: 21

How they fared: Beat No. 23 Birmingham Brother Rice, 85-56.

A win over Brother Rice earlier last week and then a highly anticipated matchup with No. 2 Orchard Lake St. Mary’s on the road was postponed. They’ll see Lake Orion and Brother Rice this week.

17 Ferndale (D2, 4-1, 3-1 OAA Red)

Previous ranking: N/R

How they fared: Beat Clarkston, 56-49; beat Oak Park, 60-53; beat No. 11 Detroit Douglass, 94-74.

A road win vs. Clarkston and a home win vs. then-No. 11 Detroit Douglass catapults the Eagles into this week’s Top 25. They’ll see Clarkston again this week before traveling to No. 12 North Farmington for an OAA Red showdown.

18 Detroit Douglass (D4, 5-1) 

Previous ranking: 11

How they fared: Beat St. Clair Shores South Lake, 86-70; beat Sterling Heights Parkway Christian, 68-58; lost to Ferndale, 94-74. 

Davis Aerospace and a big-League game vs. No. 9 Detroit King later in the week. 

19 Benton Harbor (D2, 4-1) 

Previous ranking: 13

How they fared: Beat Dowagiac, 81-54; beat No. 18 Williamston, 51-40.

Niles-Brandywine, Richland Gull Lake, and Coloma are this week’s competition.

20 Muskegon (D1, 4-2, 2-0 OK Green) 

Previous ranking: 14

How they fared: Beat Holland, 54-43; beat Wyoming, 87-52; lost to No. 4 Grand Blanc, 71-53.

The Big Reds will face Muskegon Reeths-Puffer and No. 7 Zeeland East this week.

21 Williamston (D2, 5-1, 4-1 CAAC Red) 

Previous ranking: 18

How they fared: Beat Fowlerville, 66-62; beat Lansing Eastern, 52-44; lost to No. 13 Benton Harbor, 51-40.

The Hornets have Haslett and Mason this week.

22 Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy (D2, 5-0, 4-0 CSC)

Previous ranking: 19

How they fared: Beat Warren Michigan Collegiate, 59-43; beat Detroit Community, 61-40; beat Detroit Leadership Academy, 89-16.

Decisive wins over Michigan Collegiate, Detroit Community, and Leadership Academy last week.  Home games this week vs. Warren Fitzgerald and Voyageur Prep.

23 Troy (D1, 2-0, 1-0 OAA White) 

Previous ranking: 20

How they fared: DNP

Sagged this past week by the Corona-19, the Colts will host Rochester Adams and then travel to Rochester Stoney Creek for a rematch of Troy’s double-OT winner in the first week of the season.

24 Iron Mountain (D3, 6-0, 3-0 West-PAC) 

Previous ranking: 22

How they fared: Beat Kingsford, 83-46; beat Ironwood, 83-44; beat Hancock, 67-31.

Kingsford, Ironwood, and Hancock were chalked into the win column last week. This week, West Iron Country and Houghton take the stage.

25 Croswell-Lexington (D2, 5-0, 3-0 BWAC) 

Previous ranking: 25

How they fared: Beat Armada, 55-33; beat Grosse Pointe North, 52-33

This week opponents are Yale and Almont.


Dropped out: No. 23 Birmingham Brother Rice (D1, 3-2, 1-2 CHSL Central)


On the cusp: Saginaw Arthur Hill (6-0)
