Grand Rapids – The month of February is here, and it’s time to pick up the pace in the sport of high school wrestling in the state.

This week most of the teams in the state will take part in conference tournaments, serving as a primer for the MHSAA team and individual tournaments which kick off next week.

This weekend serves as a primer for an exciting month, and based on our rankings, the cream of the sport is starting to position itself for the state tournaments.

  1. St. Johns – No change here. The Redwings look strong as evident to their 39-22 win over Davison last week.

  2. Lowell – The Red Arrows took their loss to Hartland a couple of weeks ago and turned that into a positive with wins over Detroit Catholic Central, Brighton and Richmond in a week’s span.

  3. Brighton – Still the best team in Division 1 up to this point with recent wins over Hartland and Walled Lake Central drilling that point home.

  4. Hartland – Love the win over Lowell. That will help in seeding teams at the team state tournament. The Eagles were handled by Brighton and can’t ignore that.

  5. New Baltimore Anchor Bay – Went 5-0 at the Macomb/Oakland Duals, including a nice win over Oxford.

  6. Detroit Catholic Central – This is coach Mitch Hancock’s favorite time of year, as he always seems to motivate the Shamrocks for February and March greatness.

  7. Davison – Solid team that has taken some tough losses in recent weeks, but never count out a Roy Hall coached team.

  8. Dundee – The Vikings appear to be right to defend their title in Division 3.

  9. Richmond – But don’t count out the Blue Devils in Division 3. Lost to Lowell, but had a nice win over New Lothrop last Friday night.

  10. New Lothrop – The loss to Richmond was telling, but we here at State Champs still feel the Hornets are the team to beat in Division 4.

  11. Walled Lake Central – Lost a hard-fought dual to Brighton in KLAA action this week, but the Vikings proved they belong in the talk as some of the best teams in Division 1.

  12. Niles – Beating runner-up Stevensville Lakeshore by 135 points in the Greater Berrien County Invitational last week was impressive.

  13. Grand Haven – Beat Grandville 33-26 in OK Red action last week that moves the Buccaneers into our top 15.

  14. Grandville – Bounced back with runner-up finish to Hartland at Portage Central Invitational on Saturday.

  15. Whitehall – Beating Allendale and Allegan on the same day keeps the Vikings in the Power 15.
