STATE CHAMPS! ALL-JUNIOR TEAM: Final five for boys basketball
This week, we’ll be rolling out the final four nominees for each winter sport, to narrow down who’s still in play for a spot on our STATE CHAMPS! 2019-20 All-Junior Team. The final winter All-Junior Team will be unveiled in early April.
Next up, we take a look at the final five for girls basketball:
• Foster Wonders, Iron Mountain (6-5 small forward)
First-team D3 AP all-state as a sophomore, D3 BCAM’s Best. Led the Mountaineers to the D3 title game a year ago, and to a co-championship in the West-PAC-East this season. He was was named the Player of the Year for both the Western Peninsula Athletic Conference and the Mid Peninsula Conference. Wonders averaged nearly 27 points and eight rebounds per game in the regular season.
• Kobe Bufkin, Grand Rapids Christian (6-5 shooting guard)
Averaged 22 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the 20-2 Eagles as a junior after averaging 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists in 2018-19. Led the Eagles to a second-place finish in the OK Gold. Second-team D2 AP all-state as a sophomore, D2 BCAM’s Best.
• Pierre Brooks II, Detroit Douglass (6-6 forward)
Averaged 23-2 points, 7 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.7 steals as a junior, helping lead the Hurricanes to the PSL championship game. D2 BCAM’s Best as a sophomore, when he averaged 23.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists in 2018-19.
• Legend Geeter, River Rouge (6-7 power forward)
Averaged eight points, 4.5 rebounds as a sophomore, as role was limited behind a big group of seniors, but he was the one scoring at the end of games. Entering district play, the Michigan Metro Athletic Conference champs hadn’t lost since Dec. 21, against Grand Rapids Catholic Central, with Geeter averaging 16 points, 2.0 assists and 2.0 blocks.
• Julian Lewis, Ann Arbor Huron (6-6 forward)
Averaged 12.2 points, 9.1 rebounds in 2018-19, and 12 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists to lead the River Rats to a 21-1 record and an SEC Red title.
