STATE CHAMPS! ALL-JUNIOR TEAM: Final four for boys bowling
This week, we’ll be rolling out the final four nominees for each winter sport, to narrow down who’s still in play for a spot on our STATE CHAMPS! 2019-20 All-Junior Team. The final winter All-Junior Team will be unveiled in early April.
Next up, we take a look at the final four for boys bowling:
• Izaac Goergen, Midland
After getting knocked off in the first round of match play last year as the No. 4 seed, the left-handed Goergen entered match play as the No. 3 seed this year, and rolled a 414 to beat Utica Eisenhower senior Dylan Kelly — who’d won a team title — by 69 pins for the D1 individual crown.
• Noah Tafanelli, Warren Woods Tower
A second-team D2 all-stater as a sophomore, when he finished 11th, Tafanelli rolled a 1,360 qualifying block to go into match play as the No. 1 seed, and cruised from there, winning each of his four matches by 46 or more pins, en route to the D2 individual state title. He beat Grand Rapids Northview senior Dan Frey, 494-410 in the finals.
• Logan Teubert, Jonesville
Came into match play in Division 3 as the No. 10 seed, but won three straight matches by 20 or fewer pins to take the D3 title. Teubert beat fellow junior Kaden Braun of Capac in the finals, 369-349. He was the first Jonesville boys bowler to win an individual state title, and the first of either gender since 2011.
• Hunter Haldaman, Traverse City Christian
The No. 2 seed in match play after a 1,216 qualifying block, squeezing out wins of nine, 36 and 31 pins to win the Division 4 state title. Haldaman beat USA senior Ethan Androl, 404-373 in the finals for the title.
