STATE CHAMPS FRIDAY FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Lowell sneaks past EGR behind Dean’s late touchdown

GRAND RAPIDS – A three yard Max Dean touchdown run with 59 seconds left to play gave Lowell a 30-25 win over rival East Grand Rapids on Friday night.
Dean scored three touchdowns in the first half to give the Red Arrows a 22-12 lead at halftime before scoring the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.
East Grand Rapids quarterback Mikey Roth threw three touchdowns in the game, two coming in the first half from 79 and 37 yards away to keep the Pioneers within striking distance heading to the second half.
A Noah Salasky field goal to open up the second half, followed by a two yard touchdown pass from Roth to Mason Banbury then tied the game late in the third quarter at 22-22.
East Grand Rapids would take its first lead of the game with 5:05 left to play when Salasky booted a 27 yard field goal to give the Pioneers the 25-22 advantage, but Dean’s touchdown in the final minute sealed the win for Lowell.
Ryan Stevens threw for 243 yards, while Gabe Steed made five catches for 120 yards and Sawyer Olesko made eight grabs for 90 yards to pace the Lowell offense.
Roth threw for 264 yards and three scores for East Grand Rapids and Sam Matthews tallied 118 yards receiving to help lead the way for the Pioneers.
Traverse City Central 20, Traverse City West 13: Ethan Campbell scored two touchdowns to lead Central, which is 3-0 for the first time. Traverse City High started 3-0 in 1994. Campbell scored on runs of 61 and 10 yards. Quarterback Sean Williams’ 1-yard touchdown run gave Central a 20-7 lead in the fourth quarter. West is 1-2. An estimated crowd of 10,000 attended the game. Central will host Detroit Catholic Central next week.
Walled Lake Western 18, Waterford Kettering 14: John Camilleri booted four field goals on the night coming from distances of 27, 33, 23 and 25 yards and a 49 yard touchdown pass from Kyle Thomas to James LaLonde proved to be the game winning score for Western. Thomas finished with over 200 yards of total offense for Western. Kettering had touchdown runs from Austin Wood and Danotiss Smith on the night.
Walled Lake Central 47, Walled Lake Northern 28: Nick Krumm rushed for over 250 yards on Friday night and threw for nearly 100 yards to help lead the way for Central. Krumm would score two touchdowns, coming from 70 and 65 yards away. Ray Abbott totaled over 100 yards on the ground to pace the Northern offense.
Rockford 10, Muskegon Mona Shores 7: A Tyler Bradfield touchdown run from 11 yards away in the second quarter proved to be the game winner for Rockford, who also received a first quarter field goal from Quinn Nordin. Braden King recovered a late fumble to secure the win in the fourth quarter for the Rams. Mona Shores took a 7-0 lead on the first play of the game when Darece Roberston scored on a 79 yard touchdown run.
Birmingham Brother Rice 28, Columbus Pickerington North 7: Grant Perry caught three touchdown passes from Alex Malzone, who threw another touchdown pass to John Garry to lead Brother Rice to a third straight win to open the season. Malzone finished with 338 yards through the air, while Perry made eight grabs for 185 yards and Garry added in seven catches for 71 yards to lead the Brother Rice offense.
Kalamazoo Loy Norrix 20, Kalamazoo Central 19 (OT): Facing fourth down in overtime, Loy Norrix quarterback Traver Parlato found Simeon Smith for an eight yard touchdown and the point after secured the win for Loy Norrix. Parlato finished with 210 yards passing and Smith hauled in eight passes for 81 yards while Davon Smith made seven catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns.
Howell 28, Hartland 21: Evan Sieman rushed for 284 yards on 37 carries and a pair of touchdowns to lead Howell.
Romeo 28, Utca 0: Paul Hurley completed 13-of-14 pass attempts on Friday night for 136 yards and two touchdowns in the win for Romeo.
