STATE CHAMPS! SCOUT TEAM: Catchers In The Rye — Stretching the field into the next level
Three of the best pass catchers in the Hoosier State secured their respective college plans earlier this month: Lawrence North four-star senior wide receiver Omar Cooper committed to Indiana, Fishers tight end Jeffrey Simmons committed to Miami (Ohio) and Plainfield tight end Cael Vanderbush committed to Western Michigan.
Cooper (6-foot-1.5, 185) is Hoosierland’s No. 1 wide receiving prospect. Simmons (6-6, 210) is the state’s top recruit at the tight end position. Vanderbush (6-6, 205) has enormous upside and value as a recruit. All three also excel on the hardwood as high-voltage hoopsters at their respective schools.
In 2020, Cooper scorched the stat sheet for 1,100 yards, 40 catches and 13 touchdowns on the gridiron. He caught 51 passes as a sophomore. Simmons hauled in 50 catches last fall. Vanderbush changed positions from quarterback to tight end last season and made himself a Division I recruit, collecting 44 grabs and six touchdowns.
