Five linebackers from the STATE CHAMPS! three-state footprint — Ohio, Michigan and Indiana — were featured on the preseason watch list for the high school Butkus Award, headed into the 2021 season.

A pair of Ohio State commits in Dayton Archbishop Alter’s C.J. Hicks and Marysville’s Gabe Powers were the two nominees from the Buckeye State.

Traverse City Central’s Joshua Burnham and Grand Rapids Catholic Central’s Nolan Ziegler — both Notre Dame commits — along with West Bloomfield’s Michael Williams were the nominees from Michigan.

Indiana did not have a player make the list of 51 prep linebackers.

Notre Dame-bound Prince Kollie of Jonesborough, Tenn., was the 2020 high school winner of the Butkus Award. Presented by the Butkus Foundation, the award winners are selected by a 51-member panel of coaches, scouts and sports writers.
