STATE CHAMPS! SCOUT TEAM: Football Recruiting Notebook —Avon’s Hesson Heads To MAC, commits to Miami (OH)

By: SCOTT M. BURNSTEIN, November 12, 2020, 3:55 pm

Take cover, folks. The H Bomb will be arriving in Oxford, Ohio soon.

Avon senior quarterback Henry Hesson committed to Miami (Ohio) earlier this month.

Hesson (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) was a three-year starter under center at Avon and is the best drop-back passing prospect in the state’s Class of 2021. He threw for more than 6,000 yards for his career.

Miami (Ohio) offered late in October, and Hesson jumped at it a week later. The Red Hawks got the nod over Ball State, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan.

This regular season, Hesson passed for 2,475 yards and 31 touchdowns against only five picks. The last two years, he’s hovered near the 2,000-yard mark in the air.

Hesson’s career was cut short by a COVID-19 quarantine imposed just before Avon’s sectional semifinal game against Brownsburg. He finished Just 49 yards and two touchdowns from breaking the career records set at Avon by Brandon Peters, the former Mr. Football winner who has played at both Michigan and Illinois.

Pretty big overtures

Merrillville’s Kenny Grant and Jo Jo Johnson both recently earned Big Ten offers, with the junior Grant (6-5, 345 DL) nabbing a Nebraska offer and the senior Johnson (6-0, 170 WR) receiving a bid from Iowa. Merrillville is 9-1.

Johnson de-committed from Cincinnati last month after getting his first Big Ten offer from Michigan State a week earlier. He’s made 40 grabs and scored 13 touchdowns so far this season, and was recently named the Duneland Athletic Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year. Grant’s first Big Ten offer came back in the summer when Purdue put his Power 5 bid on the table in July.

Burney’s Top 5 Uncommitted Seniors

1 Yanni Karlaftis (West Lafayette LB) — Dizzying raw power sideline to sideline.

2 Jo Jo Johnson (Merrillville WR) — Slick route runner, soft hands, big-time playmaker stretching the field.

3 Duce Taylor (Ft. Wayne North Side QB) — One of the highest upsides of anybody at the position in the Midwest.

4 Colton Parker (Carmel WR) — Most underrated prospect in the Indy area, definition of durability and reliability, tough as nails.

5 Kenny Dennis (Elkhart Central CB) — Lots of lockdown potential in pass coverage.
