STATE CHAMPS! SCOUT TEAM: GLIAC gets additions to its air show, with commits from Schoolcraft’s Alex Thole, Detroit CC’s Sam Dersa
The aerial antics these two bring to the table should keep football fans in the Grand Rapids and Saginaw areas happy and on the edge of their seats in the near future.
Accordingly, the GLIAC got a first-class pass-catch pair when Schoolcraft senior quarterback Alex Thole committed to Grand Valley State and Novi Detroit Catholic Central senior wide receiver Sammy Dersa committed to Saginaw Valley State last week. Scoreboards at the respective schools should soon become pinball-machine like and light up as if the great pinball wizard Tommy himself got going on a hot streak.
These two really push the needle for the conference. They both represent extreme value in the recruiting game and possess the necessary intangibles that every coach looks for in building a roster.
Thole (6-foot-0, 185 pounds) tore up the stat sheet last fall, throwing for 3,000 yards and 38 touchdowns. He’s the MHSAA’s Drew Brees, but with more mobility. His feathery touch and composure in the pocket make him a home run threat on every throw down field. Schoolcraft claimed a Division 7 district title in 2019.
Dersa (5-11, 180) is a nails-tough slot receiver who runs perfect routes and defines reliability. He’s unafraid to go across the middle and is a natural leader in the locker room. Saginaw Valley State just snared their quarterback of the future, Bloomfield Hills senior gunslinger Tanner Slazinski, for their 2021 recruiting class recently as well.
