STATE CHAMPS! SCOUT TEAM: Igniting Under Center In The D >> Mumpfield, Garrett flourish in Week 1 wins
The City of Detroit saw the birth of two new star signal callers in Week 1. Cigars for everyone in the waiting room.
Break out the big artillery because this pair of Motor City sidewinders have sensational written all over them: We’re talking Bruno Mars Specials aka Dripping with Finesse.
Detroit Cass Tech sophomore LeeShaun Mumpfield outshined Detroit King sophomore phenom Dante (D.J.) Moore in the Technicians 34-28 win, throwing for 305 yards and three touchdowns in PSL play.
Over in the Catholic League, Detroit Loyola junior gunslinger Anthony Garrett logged 285 yards through the air and tossed a career-high five touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 39-0 beatdown of St. Clair Shores Lake Shore.
Mumpfield was starting his first game. He is small (5-foot-8), but slippery and heady, possessing a quick-trigger on his throws. Garrett quietly led Loyola to a D7 district title last fall as a sophomore and has trimmed some baby fat off his sturdy 6-3 frame and increased his velocity and pocket awareness. Scouts see Garrett having the best upside in the city right now in terms of a college prospect.
