STATE CHAMPS! SCOUT TEAM: Indiana Basketball Recruiting Notebook >> Alabama State Snares NWI Special In Hammond’s Reed

By: SCOTT M. BURNSTEIN, October 18, 2020, 6:51 pm

Gritty is his brand. ‘Bama is his future.

Hammond senior forward Darrell Reed committed to Alabama State last week, giving the DI school out of the Southwestern Athletic Conference a genuine Grade-A grinder in the post. The 6-foot-8 Reed is the definition of a workhorse in the frontcourt, a relentless rebounder and rim protector cut from the old-school cloth of Charles Oakley or Antonio Davis. Last winter, he averaged 16 points and 8.5 rebounds a night for a Hammond team that won a sectional championship.

Blame it on Rio

Ft. Wayne Northrop senior wing Khamani Smith will be playing his college hoops next year in Ohio for NAIA Rio Grande. Smith is a silky smooth finisher in the open floor who has his future coaches Rio Grande licking their chops at his upside. He averaged 14 points per game last season.

Not so fast

The IHSAA recently ruled Ben Davis senior guard Jayden Brewer ineligible for the 2020-2021 season. The 6-5 Brewer transferred to Ben Davis from Avon back in the summer. He’s currently appealing the ruling. In 2020, Brewer logged 15 points, five assists and five boards an evening on a 13-10 Avon club.

New school, new offer

Sophomore wing Jalen Hooks is enrolled at defending Circle City champ Crispus Attucks for the ’21 campaign and just got an offer from Xavier. Hooks, a 6-6 explosive small forward, played at Franklin Central last winter and had a productive summer. As a fab frosh at Franklin Central, he recorded 10 points and five rebounds a game.
