STATE CHAMPS! SCOUT TEAM: Indiana Football Recruiting Notebook — Boilermakers bag Jefferson, IU snags Utzinger & Lozano for PWOs

Purdue swooped in at the last second on Signing Day and snatched a sleeper from Indy in Pike defensive back Joseph Jefferson.
The Boilermakers offered the active and aggressive 6-foot-1, 190-pound cornerback-safety combo right after Thanksgiving. He committed in the hours before Singing Day commenced last month and then inked on the dotted line on Dec. 15. Jefferson racked up 76 tackles and five picks in his senior campaign.

Walking to the next level with the wind at his back
The Circle City’s best linebacker the last two seasons, Indianapolis Cathedral senior Jeffrey Utzinger, has accepted a preferred walk-on spot from Indiana University. He had full-scholarship offers from Eastern Michigan, Eastern Kentucky, Akron and Ball State. The past two years, Utzinger has sparked Cathedral’s defensive unit for the program in winning repeat 5A state championships and amassing a 28-2 overall record. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder is versatile and can play all three linebacker positions. In 2021, Utzinger collected 80 tackles and three sacks.

In his junior season, Lozano passed for 1625 yards and 16 touchdowns (against four interceptions).
