Who says Michigan State’s Tom Izzo can no longer bring in the big fish in recruiting?

Izzo scored another whopper of a catch on Thursday, landing four-star 2021 point guard Jaden Akins, a Farmington native.

Akins announced the commitment with a video post on Twitter.

The 6-foot-3 Akins is ranked the No. 2 player in Michigan’s 2021 class, the No. 12 point guard in the nation and the No. 90 player overall, according to 247sports. Rivals ranks Akins as the No. 14 point guard and the No. 65 player overall, while ESPN’s recruiting service ranked Akins as the No. 12 point guard, and the No. 67 player in the nation on the ESPN100 list.

He chose the Spartans over 13 other offers, including Michigan, DePaul, Florida, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, Missouri, Northwestern and Xavier.

The Spartans’ 2021 class now has the top two players in the state’s class of rising seniors, when you add Akins to Detroit Douglass’ Pierre Brooks, and five star Illinois guard Max Christie, who committed to the Spartans in early July. Then, of course, MSU’s 2022 class has the No. 1 high school player in the nation, former Ypsilanti Lincoln star Emoni Bates, who has could possibly reclassify.

Akins was one of the players who left his MHSAA-affiliated high school to join the new Ypsi Prep Academy, founded by Bates’ father.
