STATE CHAMPS! SCOUT TEAM: Top Secret >> Reitz’s Dease Decides it’s Corpus Christie Islanders time
The Secret is out. As in going out of the state and heading the Lonestar way.
Evansville Reitz senior shooting guard Owen Dease, nicknamed “The Secret” by teammates (as in the best kept secret in Hoosierland’s Class of ‘21), gobbled up a late scholarship from Texas A&M-Corpus Christie and committed to the Islanders of the Southland Conference last week to cap off his final days as a high schooler. Evansville and IUPUI were his only other offers, but boy did those boys down in the Lonestar State bag themselves a dandy.
Former Purdue assistant Steve Lutz just took the A&M-Corpus Christie job and it didn’t take him long to dip into the Hoosier State and come away with a steal. The rangy and soft-shooting 6-foot-5 Dease is a two-star prospect with four-star upside. Scouts compare him to an off-guard’s version of Tyrese Hailburton (Sacramento Kings). This past winter, he averaged 17.5 points per game and shot 45 percent from downtown. He became the eighth member of the 1,000 point club at Reitz and won a second straight sectional championship.
Five sleepers to watch in the class of’ 22
Jahni Summers (Evansville Harrison 6-5) — Shake and bake special of a wing guard, the Owen Dease of ’22.
Omari Ferguson (Indianapolis Pike 6-2) — One of the fastest improving backcourt gems in the Circle City.
Travis Grayson (Chesterton 6-0) — Maybe the most underrated floor general in Northwest Indiana, a total gamer.
Randy Kelley (Sullivan 6-0) — Gunner with grit, finesse, finisher’s mentality and natural leadership ability.
Tyrelle Wills (Anderson 6-3) — Just scratching the surface on what he can become, monster-mash moves in the open court.
