STATE CHAMPS! SCOUT TEAM: View To A Kill — GVSU gets steal in Orchard View’s Barnes

By: SCOTT M. BURNSTEIN, June 12, 2021, 8:15 am

The biggest punch in the smallest package out of the backcourt for the Class of ’21 is ready to ball out at GVSU. This kid is a true killer baseline to baseline.

Muskegon Orchard View guard Keontae Barnes, one of the state’s most prolific scorers the past two seasons, announced he will play at Grand Valley State in college last weekend. His education is being paid for, but he will not be on athletic scholarship right off the bat. Grand Valley State intends on redshirting him next winter.

The spunky and efficient, 6-foot Barnes averaged 26 points per night in 2021 and became his school’s all-time leading scorer (1,607), whole being named Division 2 Player of the Year by the Associated Press. For the scoring crown, he passed Brian Montonati (Orchard View ’95), who went on to have a solid career in the Big 12 at Oklahoma State. During his junior campaign, Barnes poured in 27 points per contest.

Three commitments that could be coming down the pike:

Ypsilanti Lincoln 6-5 combo guard Braelon Green is said to be leaning towards MSU.

Farmington 6-6 gunner Robert Davis might be destined for UMass.

Ludington’s 6-8 forward Peyton LaCombe is flirting with Michigan Tech.
