Steve Mann’s play-making ability leads Country Day past Bedford, 21-20
Beverly Hills – Steve Mann took over the game in the second half and Detroit Country Day will take a 9-0 record into the playoffs with a shot at hosting three Division 4 playoff games.
Mann, a senior quarterback and defensive back, scored one touchdown, passed for another and his conversion pass to Nick Neibauer proved to be the winning points as the Yellowjackets held off Temperance Bedford, 21-20, in a nonleague game on Friday at Country Day.
Trailing 14-13 Mann drove his team 87 yards in eight plays to score the go-ahead touchdown. Mann had two carries for nine yards and completed both of his attempts for 45 yards on the drive. His 32-yard touchdown pass to Neibauer gave Country Day a 19-14 lead with 5:09 left. Coach Dan MacLean decided to go for the two-point conversion and the play appeared busted as Mann scrambled to his left to avoid the rush. Mann avoided three potential tacklers and ran to his right before spotting Neibauer in the right corner of the end zone for a 21-14 lead.
That play loomed larger as Bedford scored on the next play from scrimmage on Brady Nowak’s 55-yard touchdown run with 4:51 left. The extra point try was wide left and the Yellowjackets still led, 21-20.
But Bedford still had one more shot. The Kicking Mules took over on their 3-yard line with 2:23 left, gained three first downs and on third-and-6 from the Country Day 38 that guy again, Mann, intercepted with 24.2 seconds left to end the game.
Mann was 11-of-21 for 165 yards and no interceptions. Neibauer only gained 25 yards on seven carries but all of that came in the fourth quarter when the game was being decided.
Bedford quarterback Joey Wiemer rushed for 88 yards on 25 carries and was 5-of-11 passing for 55 yards. Fifty of those yards came on the last drive.
Country Day took a 7-0 lead with 8:40 left in the first quarter on Chris Bergen’s 77-yard touchdown run through the middle of the Bedford line.
Bedford (7-2) answered on the next possession as the Kicking Mules went 61 yards in 12 plays to tie the score at 7-7. Joey Wiemer scored on a 2-yard run. It was his seventh carry of the drive good for 43 yards.
Wiemer’s 5-yard touchdown run on Bedford’s next possession gave the Kicking Mules a 14-7 lead with 7:25 left in the half.
Mann completed four consecutive passes to lead the Yellowjackets downfield on the next series but a fourth-and-goal pass from the 10 was batted down by David Jeffers in the end with 2:44 remaining to end the drive.
Bedford was able to gain a first down and the half ended with Bedford holding the 14-7 lead.
Wiemer rushed for 80 yards on 17 carries to lead the Bedford offense in the half.
For Country Day Mann was 5-of-10 for 42 yards and Bergen had six carries for 81 yards. For the game Bergen had 97 yards on 10 carries.
