The Big Bang Theory — DLS BBall Star Sulaka Blasts Off To WMU
Warren’s workhorse in the middle will be heading west for his college hoops.
Warren De La Salle senior center Mike Sulaka committed to Western Michigan last week, giving the Broncos a state champion and 2022 Mr. Basketball candidate, for their 2023 recruiting class.
The rangy, rugged and soft-shooting Sulaka (6-9) is arguably the No. 1 big man in the state. Last season, he helped lead De La Salle to a Division 1 state title, averaging 12 points and rebounds per night. His numbers would be more gaudy on the majority of other squads, but Sulaka is a selfless competitor and plays with a loaded roster of Pilots teammates.
WMU offered him back in June. Toledo and Eastern Michigan were the first DI programs to enter the recruiting picture.
“Mikey has put in countless hours working on his craft, paying attention to every facet of his game, to put himself in position to earn this kind of opportunity,” said DLS Pilots head coach Gjon Djokaj. “His improvement since he first entered high school has simply been remarkable and he shows no signs of slowing down.”
Despite being lanky, Sulaka is active and aggressive, making up for his thinner frame. Don’t lose track of him near the perimeter though either, because he can also step out of the paint and sink open jumpers that usually hit nothing but net.
“He doesn’t just continue to grow physically, his understanding of the game and his overall skill level keeps getting better every day, too,” Djokaj said. “I have no doubt Michael Sulaka’s best basketball is still in front of him.”
