The Northern Star — Dogged De La Salle PG Carter-Smith Selects Lake Superior State
The MHSAA’s Mr. Big Shot will be heading north for his college hoops.
Warren De La Salle senior point guard Nino Carter-Smith committed to Lake Superior State on October 21st.
The 6-foot-1 Carter-Smith is already one of the most clutch performers to ever play in the celebrated and storied Catholic League. He averaged 16 points and 7 assists last winter in the postseason in the Pilots run to collecting a Division 1`state championship. As a sophomore, he knocked down a buzzer-beating 3 to win the regional title for De La Salle on its way to the final four in 2021.
“Nino is a proven winner in every way.” De La Salle head coach Djon Gjokaj said. “All that big-game experience will translate well into college. He’s a true point guard. He makes everyone around him better and he defends at a.high level. More than that though, he’s an elite leader, the definition of a floor general and a competitor of the highest order.”
With Carter-Smith at the helm of the Pilots offense in ’23 and the state’s No. 1 big man, senior center Mike Sulaka, holding things down in the middle, De La Salle has a good chance at pulling off the repeat. Sulaka committed to Western Michigan earlier this month.
Lake Superior State went 16-11 last season. The Lakers play out of the GLIAC, one of the premier DII conferences in the country.
