Top 25 Michigan HS football teams after Week 6 of 2018 season: South Lyon moves into rankings, as LVC’s lone unbeaten
There were 55 teams around the state that clinched automatic berths in the MHSAA 11-player football playoffs with a sixth win this past weekend, including half of the top 25. South Lyon is the lone remaining unbeaten team in the Lakes Valley Conference, and takes the spot in the rankings vacated by Dearborn Fordson after a tough loss to Belleville.
Michigan football rankings for the week of Oct. 1, 2018:
1 Cass Tech (6-0, 3-0 PSL Green) — The Technicians beat Detroit Cody, 48-0, earning an automatic bid to the playoffs for an 11th straight season. (Last week: 1) Up next: vs. Detroit Mumford.
2 Muskegon (6-0, 3-0 OK Black) — The Big Reds won their 20th straight game, beating Jenison, 49-7. Jeremiah Lockhart had a 73-yard TD on Muskegon’s first snap, finishing with 155 and two TDs on seven carries. Quarterback Cameron Martinez scored on three of his five carries and one of his five passes, contributing 192 total yards. Muskegon scored on all six of its drives in the first half, needing just 19 plays to do so. The showdown with Muskegon Mona Shores is now just two weeks away. 3 Belleville (6-0, 5-0 KLAA East) — Julian Barnett caught two of the three touchdown passes tossed by Christian Dhue-Reid, who also ran for the go-ahead score, as the Tigers beat No. 23 Dearborn Fordson, 29-26. Abe Jaafar had 179 yards and two TDs for Fordson, which led by 10 points twice in the game. Three of Belleville’s six wins have come by a total of 13 points, and the Tigers trailed in four games. 4 Detroit King (5-1, 4-0 PSL Black) — The Crusaders beat Detroit Douglass, 38-0, to clinch their 10th straight playoff berth. (Last week: 4) Up next: vs. Detroit Denby
5 Clarkston (6-0, 4-0 OAA Red) — Clarkston’s win streak reached 13 games, as the Wolves beat Bloomfield Hills, 55-7, to clinch a 16th straight playoff berth. (Last week: 5) Up next: vs. Oxford
6 Oak Park (6-0, 5-0 OAA White) — The Knights beat Troy, 26-9, and clinched a seventh straight playoff berth. Now they face a Rochester team that’s played Rochester Adams, Birmingham Groves and Farmington Hills Harrison tight (three losses by 11 total points), before taking on West Bloomfield and Clarkston in Weeks 8-9. 7 Clinton Twp. Chippewa Valley (6-0, 3-0 MAC Red) — Tommy Schuster threw four touchdowns, giving him the all-time record for TD passes for the Big Reds with 53, as Chippewa Valley beat Warren-Mott, 49-21. David Ellis had 109 yards receiving and two TD catches for Chippewa Valley, while Myren Harris ran for 111 yards and three scores. (Last week: 7) Up next: vs. Sterling Heights Stevenson
8 Novi Detroit Catholic Central (5-1, 1-0 CHSL Central) — Jack Beno threw TD passes to Nate Anderson and Ryan Birney, while Noah Shanlian and Parker Bohland had defensive scores for the Shamrocks, who beat Columbus (Ohio) COF Academy, 35-14. (Last week: 8) Up next: at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s
9 Warren De La Salle (5-1, 2-0 CHSL Central) — The Pilots beat Detroit U-D Jesuit, 41-20, and will step out of conference for a matchup with No. 20 Davison before taking on Novi Detroit Catholic Central for the CHSL Central Division title. (Last week: 9) Up next: at Davison
10 West Bloomfield (5-1, 4-1 OAA Red) — The Lakers jumped out to a 21-0 lead, but had to hold on to beat Rochester Adams, 24-20. C.J. Harris ran for one touchdown, and threw for two — one 58-yarder each to Lance Dixon and Donovan Edwards. Jake Ward’s field goal in the final minutes made it a two-score game, but Adams’ Colin Weeks returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a score to tighten it up again. 11 River Rouge (5-1, 3-0 Michi-Metro Blue) — Emmanuel Ferguson ran for 158 yards and two TDs, and threw for another, as River Rouge beat a turnover-prone, Corey Graham-less Harper Woods, 35-7. Caleef Jenkins had a pair of TD runs for River Rouge. (Last week: 12) Up next: at Detroit Voyageur
12 Muskegon Mona Shores (6-0, 3-0 OK Black) — Cam Sobish (two TDs) had 79 of Mona Shores’ 235 team rushing yards in a 56-0 win over Grand Rapids Union. Caden Broersma’s two completions (in five attempts) went for scores, as Mona Shores scored 28 first-quarter points and recorded its third shutout of the season. (Last week: 13) Up next: at Jenison
13 East Kentwood (5-1, 4-0 OK Red) — Another balanced attack, as the Falcons passed for 252 yards — Kyle Dent threw for two TDs to Ryel Daye — and rushed for 147, beating Grand Haven, 55-6. Kionte Blakely returned a kickoff for a score and Ayeden Ashberry had a punt return for a TD. (Last week: 14) Up next: at Holland
14 Farmington Hills Harrison (5-1, 4-1 OAA White) — Rod Heard ran for 286 yards and three scores on 37 carries, as the Hawks beat Rochester, 27-24. (Last week: 15) Up next: vs. Rochester Adams
15 Saline (5-1, 3-0 SEC Red) — Andrew Arbaugh threw for 186 yards and two scores, and Brendan Munday had three rushing touchdowns, as the Hornets ripped off their fifth straight win, beating Ann Arbor Pioneer, 40-0. Middle linebacker Alex Morrison had a pair of interceptions i the shutout. (Last week: 16) Up next: at Ann Arbor Huron
16 Lapeer (6-0, 4-0 SVL South) — Phoenix Dixon scored four rushing touchdowns, and Darien Baker had another, as Lapeer beat Grand Blanc, 42-10. Brady Apple threw a TD pass to Kyle Sahr, as well, as Lapeer locked up its fifth straight playoff berth since the merger of East and West. Grand Blanc has now lost two straight (by a 91-17 margin) after starting 4-0. (Last week: 17) Up next: at Flint Carman-Ainsworth, noon Saturday
17 Walled Lake Western (4-2, 4-1 LVC) — Sam Johnson had 197 yards passing and a rushing touchdown, but that was it for the Western highlights, as the Warriors lost 28-7 to White Lake Lakeland. Robbie Tracy had 282 of Lakeland’s 418 yards rushing, and all four of the Eagles’ TDs in the win. (Last week: 11) Up next: vs. South Lyon East
18 Holland West Ottawa (5-1, 3-1 OK Red) — Isaac VanDyke threw three touchdown passes and ran for a pair of scores, as West Ottawa beat Wyoming 55-22. (Last week: 18) Up next: at Grandville
19 Macomb Dakota (5-1, 2-1 MAC Red) — De’Javion Stepney had 196 yards and two TDs on the ground, as Dakota eat Utica Ford, 33-0. Austin Morrison added 169 yards and Mark Tocco threw two TD passes and ran for one. (Last week: 19) Up next: at Romeo
20 Davison (6-0, 4-0 SVL South) — Cannon Hall threw for 158 yards and a score, and ran for two TDs for Davison, which beat Flint Southwestern 35-0. Mike Jamerson had 94 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Cardinals, wile Max Slezak and Brendan Sullivan caught scoring passes for the Cardinals, who are in the playoffs for the fourth straight season. 21 Zeeland East (5-1, 3-0 OK Green) — Josh Fusco ran for 172 yards and a trio of scores on 12 carries, as the Chix beat Holland, 25-3. Quarterback Gabe Taylor ran for a score, as well, while Boone Bonnema had 13 tackles on defense. (Last week: 21) Up next: vs. Byron Center
22 DeWitt (6-0, 4-0 CAAC Blue) — Five different players (Thaddeus Anwar, Blake Gatfield, Tyler Warren, Andrew Debri [2] and Collin Dinninger) rushed for touchdowns for the Panthers, who beat Lansing Everett, 53-0, and have outscored their CAAC Blue opponents 178-7. Gatfield also threw a TD pass to Ryan Heath. DeWitt has qualified for the playoffs for a 13th straight season. (Last week: 22) Up next: at Grand Ledge
23 Brighton (5-1, 5-0 KLAA West) — Hunter Weber had two interceptions and a fumble recovery to earn the ‘Turnover Dog Tag’ for the week, as Brighton beat Northville, 21-0. Will Jontz ran for 118 yards and two TDs for Brighton, while Chris Sequin added 58 yards and a score. (Last week: 24) Up next: vs. Salem
24 Mt. Pleasant (6-0, 4-0 SVL North) — Zach Mogg ran for 223 yards and two TDs, as the Oilers beat Midland 40-20 to sew up their first playoff berth since 2015. Jackson Ostrowsky threw a TD pass to brother Joe Ostrowsky and two to Tyler Huenemann, and ran for another score himself. (Last week: 25) Up next: vs. Saginaw
25 South Lyon (6-0, 5-0 LVC) — Conner Fracassi threw two TD passes to Brendon Lach, while Jack Schafer had a pair of touchdown runs, and Ian Goins and Dom Santoni added one each, a the Lions beat Walled Lake Central, 48-0, to clinch their first playoff spot in two seasons, and their first automatic qualifier since 2014. With the win, and Walled Lake Western’s loss to Lakeland, the Lions are the lone team still unbeaten in Lakes Valley Conference play. Up next: at Waterford Mott
