Top Boys soccer players: Shefkiu, Beckett should be heated race for Mr. Soccer
Last year’s Mr. Soccer award winner, DeJuan Jones of East Lansing, is now at Michigan State.
Jones led East Lansing to back-to-back Division 2 titles and was a high school All-America selection. He opted to stick with his high school and TNT Dynamite club team all four years, declining to play for one of the U.S. Soccer academies. Now, he is suiting up for Michigan State and gaining ample minutes as a freshman for a top 25 college program.
Jones’ departure from the high school scene means there will be a new Mr. Soccer honoree come November of this year. And while some of the state’s top talent will not be suiting up for their respective high schools and playing for one of the academies, there’s still an abundance of talent in the prep ranks — including a multitude of D-I and D-II college prospects.
As the 2015 high school season in Michigan heats up, there are two players that coaches feel enter the campaign as legitimate Mr. Soccer candidates. Beyond that, there are dozens of talented players throughout the state who will be garnering high postseason accolades.
Here’s some of the top individual talents to watch in the State Champs’ inaugural boys soccer statewide preview.
FIELD PLAYERS
1. LEUTRIM SHEFKIU, Mason sr. M: Named to the All-State Dream Team as a junior, Shefkiu is the top player on the top-ranked team in state and if the Bulldogs are to win the Division 2 state title, it will be Shefkiu leading the way. A dynamic playmaker who demands respect both as a distributor and as a finisher, Shefkiu had 12 goals and 10 assists as a junior for a team that reached the state semifinals. He has phenomenal vision and his technical gifts allow him to make those around him better. Mason is 56-10-5 during Shefkiu’s first three seasons and he is being recruited by of Michigan State, Oakland, Western Michigan, and Detroit Mercy, among others. He is a three-time team captain, a four-year starter and was selected All-State as a sophomore and junior. Shefkiu is also a standout on his TNT Dynamite MRL club team and is a three-time State Cup finalist in the club scene to boot.
2. MICHAEL BECKETT, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s sr. F: It was only a decade ago when St. Mary’s finally added soccer and now the Eaglets have a player that could be the state’s best. What makes Beckett special is not only his finishing and playmaking abilities, but his sure speed and strength. Beckett checks in at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds and can overpower the opposition on the attack. He recently gave a verbal to Michigan State without ever playing at the Academy level and was All-State Dream Team as a junior. He collected 13 goals and six assists last season and holds multiple season and career scoring records for OLSM.
3. JAVIER STEINWASCHER, Utica Ford sr. M/F: In 1989 Steinwascher’s father, Henry, led Fraser to the regional finals and was a Dream Team player. His son could follow in his footsteps. An ODP Region II pool player since 2011, Steinwascher had 16 goals and 20 assists as a junior to earn All-State First Team status in Division 1. He was Team MVP as both a sophomore and junior and was All-State Honorable Mention as a sophomore when Ford reached the semifinals. He raises the play and confidence level of those around him, is a great finisher and crafty with the ball. He committed to Indianapolis.
4. NICK KING, Mattawan sr. M: One of four returning Division 2 All-State First Team selections, King is a four-year starter who deploys fantastic field vision and is the consummate team player and finisher. If Mattawan is to win its first title, it will be a King at the center of it all. At 6-foot tall, King is dynamite in the air and a natural leader. He led his team with 20 goals and 18 assists last season.
5. JUSTIN SCHUENEMAN, Utica Eisenhower sr. M: Eisenhower has never been short on talent and Schueneman is the latest in the long line of standouts for the Eagles. He is at his best creating chances for others while he can uncork a blistering shot from 30 yards and in, which keeps the opposition honest all the time. He’s the type of player that fuels his team’s engine.
6. HUNTER OLSON, Canton sr. F/M: Playing behind three other All-State players last season, Olson still scored a team-best 16 goals with nine assists in leading the explosive Chiefs to the Division 1 title. An All-State choice last year, Olson is a pure goal scorer and has a knack of scoring clutch goals against quality competition. He scored four goals in the tournament run and two game winners, including one late against Saline in the state semifinals.
7. NICK MASSEY, Salem sr. F: Set for a breakout year, Massey is already wreaking havoc on opposing teams this season Last year he notched 13 goals with six assists and was named All-State Honorable Mention but many coaches believe he’s one of the more dangerous players around who was in the shadows of many great players in the KLAA the past couple of years.
8. LENNART ZORN, Rochester Adams sr. F: A sniper, Zorn was second on the Highlanders’ scoresheet last season with 15 goals and eight assists and was a determined player down the stretch helping Adams reach the state finals. He’s another player who is accurate within 30 yards and is always drawing the opposition’s top mark. Zorn netted All-State Second Team last season.
9. PRESTON BOSHOVEN, Portage Central sr. F: Another player who was waiting in the wings last season behind some talented players in his conference, Boshoven is off to a fine start this season with six goals for a team that is 7-0-0. He’s fast, has a knack for the goal and his 1-on-1 skills allow him to get into position to be a constant threat. The Mustangs were 19-2-1 last season and he was a key cog in an explosive offense with bigger things to come this season. He was All-State Third Team last season after scoring 19 goals with three assists.
10. ERIC OESTERLE, Williamston sr. D: The Spartans were Division 3 runners-up last November and Oesterle was a star on the defensive end, earning All-State First Team honors. The ball rarely gets past him, which is why he’s one of the best defensive-minded players in the state.
11. CONNOR MCDEVITT, Rochester Adams sr. D/M: After starting at center back as a freshman in 2012, McDevitt spent the past two seasons playing for the Vardar Academy. He opted to return to the Highlanders as a senior to try to win a state championship after missing out on last year’s Division 1 state runner-up trophy. He’s playing with an injury, but his soccer IQ is off the charts.
12. VINCE MANZO, Warren De La Salle jr. F/M: While De La Salle is in the midst of a rebuilding campaign, Manzo is still a dynamic player, earning All-State Second Team honors in Division 1 as a sophomore. He is very crafty with the ball and finds a way to be in the right positions to get the ball in the danger zone.
13. TORIN GEBAUER, Troy Athens sr. D/M: Rock solid defensively, Gebauer keeps getting better with age and is set for a big season for the Red Hawks. Last season he was All-State Third Team in Division 1 and has been part of a combined 35 wins his sophomore and junior years and five more victories to start this season. He’s a fine distributor, dangerous in air and takes command on the field.
14. ZACH HOBSON, Berkley sr. M: A four-year starter, Hobson earned All-State Third Team honors last year. He’s very strong and commands the middle of the field. Hobson is garnering plenty of college interest. Last season he had three goals and 17 assists.
15. DANE HAGGARTY, Clinton Township Chippewa Valley sr. M/F: A dangerous player as both a finisher and set-up man, Haggerty is the engine that makes the Big Reds go. He notched nine goals and 10 assists last year and All-State Third Team honors last season, where he missed the first part of the season with an injury.
16. MOHAMMED HAJI, Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central jr. F: With former sophomore running mate Eric Connerty off to the Wolves Academy, Haji will become one of the focal points for an offensive-minded team seeking a Final Four run. He ticked the nets 16 times last season with three dimes and with his speed and explosive shot is hard to defend. He was All-State Honorable Mention in Division 1 last season as sophomore and even earned all-district two years ago as a freshmen. His best is yet to come.
17. AUSTIN PEET, Ypsilanti Lincoln sr. M: One of the top players to come out of the town of Ypsilanti, Peet was sterling last season as an attacking center midfielder. He scored 12 goals with 10 assists for an up-and-coming program and earned the respect by making the cut for the All-State Third Team in Division 1.
18. ANTHONY ROWE, Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central sr. F: Rowe was injured for stretches last season but has bounced back this season to be an explosive threat with the ball. Rowe netted seven goals with four assists in the first two weeks of the season and one of the reasons why Central is primed for a big year in Division 1.
19. JOHNNY RODRIGUEZ, Northville sr. M: Rodriguez is another talented playmaker who is slated for a big season for one of the top teams in Division 1. Last season the center midfielder scored seven goals and dished out seven assists for a team that won a district title. He finished with All-State Third Team honors.
20. NICK SHARPE, Fraser sr. M: The Ramblers’ first run to the semifinals last season was due in part to the team’s dominating midfield play. Sharpe was part of that well-oiled machine and will have even a greater role this season. Sharpe had nine goals and 13 assists last season and earned All-State Honorable Mention status.
21. KENNIE KERNEN, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood sr. M/F: The Cranes’ motor out on the field, Kernen lit up the stat sheet for 18 goals and 10 assists playing both forward and attacking midfielder. He was a key part of Cranbrook’s run to the Division 2 finals and earned All-State Third Team honors for a team that will again be good enough to make another run.
22. MICHAEL BLAKE, Plymouth sr. M/F: Already off to a fine start with six goals on the season, Blake is another player that was down the list playing in the shadows of numerous star players in the loaded KLAA. He was All-State Honorable Mention last year.
23. TONY ASIMADU, Novi sr. M/F: Part of a small contingent of holdovers from last season’s Wildcats, Asimadu consistently put pressure on opposing defenses and collected four goals with 13 assists against top-level competition. He has exceptional speed and dribbling skills to create chances.
24. JORDAN SALHANI, Canton sr. D/M: Here’s another player who comes back to the high school ranks after competing for the Michigan Wolves Academy last year and it’s truly the Chiefs’ gain. Canton lost most of its defense and Salhani can fit into the center back position and locks things down or be placed into the midfield.
25. BRADY ROBERTSON, Portage Central sr. M: Part of Central’s dynamite duo, Robertson was All-State Honorable Mention and is one of the reasons why the Mustangs will be a serious threat in Division 1 this season. Last year the agile 6-foot, 175-pound center midfielder provided 10 goals and 12 assists to a team that finished with 19 wins and a league title. He is already racking in assists this season in helping Central to a fine 7-0-0 start.
26. MITCHELL HERRIED, Rockford sr. D: Headed for Western Michigan, Herried is currently injured and his return is uncertain. When healthy, he is an aggressive lockdown defender and great at organizing the back line. He was All-State Honorable Mention in Division 1 last year.
27. BEN HOFFMAN, Petoskey sr. M/F: After collecting 18 goals and 11 assists and making the Division 2 All-State Second Team last season, Hoffman came down with a health issue and will miss some action. When healthy, the versatile Hoffman is dynamite both as attacking midfielder or forward, depending on his team’s alignment. He can set up players with the best of them and yet is not bashful to pull the trigger.
28. JOSH NOWAK, Tecumseh jr. M: Perhaps the top returning player from South Central Michigan, Nowak contributed 63 percent of his team’s scoring last season, where he had 15 goals and 30 assists to earn All-State Second Team honors in Division 2. He helped the Indians win 10 straight games at one point last season thanks to his unselfish style of play.
29. SIMON ROENNECKE, Birmingham Roeper jr. F: Roeper captured its first Division 4 title last fall and Roennecke was one of the state’s most dangerous snipers, blasting home 40 goals with 36 assists for 116 points, one of the highest totals in the state. An All-State First Team selection, Roennecke scored four goals in the state finals and despite drawing double teams against every team Roeper faced, was able to get off shots and find the back of the net with regularity. Could be one of state’s all-time leading scorers by the time he graduates.
30. JACK LEE, Frankenmuth jr. M: A ODP Region II player, Lee is perhaps the top talent in the Saginaw area. Last season he finished with 14 goals and 13 assists for a team that finished 17-5-4 and won a district. Listed as All-State First Team as a sophomore, what makes Lee so dangerous is that he has a cannon of a shot and is a fine distributor of the ball.
31. WILL HARAN, Flint Powers Catholic sr. M/F: During Haran’s sophomore campaign, he helped Powers claim the Division 3 championship. Last season he was all over the Chargers’ state sheet with 23 goals and 10 assists for a team that finished 15-3-3. He garnered All-State First Team accolades while also running cross country at the same time. Haran’s an energizer bunny on the soccer pitch and everything that Powers tries to do offensively goes through him.
32. KYLE COSTIGAN, Tawas City sr. F: Costigan is one of the reasons why Tawas has developed into one of the better Division 3 teams in recent years and he is starting to garner plenty of college interest. Named to the All-State First Team last year, Costigan led the Braves with 33 goals and 25 assists in leading his team to the semifinals. He’s a very skilled ball-handler and counters with a powerful yet accurate shot. He was All-State Second Team as a sophomore.
33. KYLE DESANA, Grosse Ile jr. M: His team ventured to the Division 3 semifinals last autumn and DeSana earned All-State First Team status. The gifted center midfielder scored eight goals with seven assists last season after playing a major role on both ends of the pitch.
34. JACOB LYON, Lansing Christian sr. M: One of the state’s top small-school talents, Lyon still made the Lansing State Journal Dream Team next to players from the larger schools. He collected 27 goals and 13 assists last season to earn All-State First Team accolades in Division 4 for a team that has consistently been ranked in the top five all throughout his prep career and No. 1 in the first poll this season.
35. JACOB GARAFALO, Gladwin sr. F: Coaches are raving about this rising talent from a team that is making an approach towards the top 10 in Division 3. Gladwin finished 16-3-0 last year with Garafalo’s foot providing quite the spark. He shattered the school mark with a state-best 48 goals to go along with 33 tallies he notched as a sophomore and 17 as a freshman, good for 98 career tallies entering the campaign. Also carrying a 4.0 GPA, Garafalo is already one of the Bay City area’s all-time leading goal scorers and could crack the top 25 all-time in state history. He earned All-State Second Team honors last season.
TOP GOALKEEPERS
1. AUSTIN KACZMAREK, Livonia Stevenson sr.: With a sub 1.00 GAA last season, eight of his 10 shutouts came against KLAA competition. He makes the saves he supposed to while quite capable of making the big-time save. Stevenson should be one of the better teams in Division 1 this year and Kaczmarek will be the caboose stoking the engine.
2. JULIAN FETTERMAN, Berkley sr.: Fetterman (6-4, 190) is an agile goal keeper. A three-year starter, Fetterman commands the penalty box as well as any keeper and is turning heads with college scouts. He had seven shutouts as a junior and the ODP Region II keeper has garnered interest from UCLA, UC-San Diego, Cal State and Indiana. He has great hands and footwork and his upside is enormous.
3. TREVOR STORMES, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood sr.: It wasn’t the nine shutouts that turned heads, it was Stormes’ play in the postseason that did, as he led the Cranes to the Division 2 state runner-up slot. Stormes earned All-State First Team honors due to his great range and clutch play. He will be an absolute steal for college coaches — a proven winner.
4. DYLAN BROWN, Rochester Adams jr.: When another keeper in the Adams program bolted for the Vardar Academy two years ago, the door was open for Brown, who came in and stole the show. A starter as both a freshman and sophomore, Brown posted a sterling 0.51 GAA last season. But what attracts so much attention is Brown’s ability to stop the penalty kick and close-range shots. His instincts are what makes him one of the state’s top backstops. He was All-State Honorable Mention last season.
5. NATHANIEL REED, Petoskey sr.: Much like his sibling Grant Reed, who is now at Colgate, the younger Reed thrives between the pipes. He was All-State Third Team in Division 2 and has garnered some college interest. Reed is steady in goal and makes more than the routine saves.
6. BEN ELLIOTT, Dexter sr.: Elliot was part of 16 shutouts as a junior in helping the Dreadnaughts reach the Division 2 semifinals. He was All-State Honorable Mention last season for a 20-win program, consistently making big saves.
