TRACK AND FIELD: Boys and Girls Regional Competitions Heat Up
Tis the season for tournaments, as many high school teams have their eyes on the prize: the state finals. This past weekend in track and field, there were many regional competitions that brought standout teams one-step closer to the big event. One competition was the Division 1, region 6 boys and girls track and field regional hosted by North Farmington High School this past Saturday, May 18th. This meet consisted of the following teams: Berkley, Wylie E. Groves, Seaholm, Brother Rice, Farmington, Farmington Hills Harrison, North Farmington, Farmington Hills Mercy, Southfield Lathrup, Livonia Stevenson, Oak Park, Thurston, Royal Oak, Southfield and West Bloomfield.
On the boy’s side, Brother Rice took home victory with a total of 88 points, with Southfield only 1 point behind. Oak Park rounded out the top three with 66 points. Berkley brought in the rear with 11.50 total points. Brother Rice’s Justin Flynn won the 100 meter dash with an impressive time of 10.88. Torin Wile also brought one home for the Warriors with a 1:57:00 time for the 800 meter run. It was second place Southfield however, that ended up in the first place spot for many of the individual events. Their 800 meter relay team won with a time of 1:27.88, as well as the 400 and 1600 meter relay teams with times of 43.15 and 3:21.56, respectively. Southfield’s Tre Walton, who has committed to Grand Valley State for football, got to show off his many athletic talents. Not only is he a major part of the 800 and 1600 meter relay teams, Walton won the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.10. Royal Oak’s Ben Hill can also boast multiple wins. He swept the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:21.51 and the 3200 meter run at 9:40.08.
Over on the girl’s side, Birmingham’s Seaholm High School stood alone at the top with a score of 98, separating them by 17 points from second place Oak Park. In third place was West Bloomfield with 72.50 points. Southfield Lathrup came in last place with a total score of 11. Seaholm’s 3200 meter relay team consisting of Tess Wilberding, Patty Giradot, Kate Ownes and Danielle Bentzley continued their season domination with a time of 9:50.65, 18 full seconds ahead of second place Livonia Stevenson. While Seaholm did not win any additional individual events, second place Oak Park took home the 800 meter relay at 1:49.92 and the 1600 meter relay at 3:52.84. The Knights also took home victory in the 400 meter dash, thanks to Anna Jefferson, who came in at just over 56 seconds. Anna’s success did not stop there; she also won the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.25. As a sophomore, Jefferson is going to be one to look out for in the future, as she already attended The Motor City TC AAU Junior Olympics in 2012 as a freshman! West Bloomfield’s Erin Finn also had a great meet, winning the 1600 and 3200 meter runs with times of 4:49.64 and 10:25.74, respectively.
