Winter 2019-20 All-Junior Team watch lists for boys and girls skiing

By: MATTHEW B. MOWERY, January 29, 2020, 5:21 pm

Here are the watch lists for this year’s All-Junior Team selections from boys and girls skiing. Mining the results from last year’s finals, as well as the all-state list from the Michigan High School Ski Coaches Association (MHSSCA), we have a solid working list of kids to keep an eye on, as the winter season progresses. We’ll narrow the field down to four finalists somewhere around the week of March 11, then announce the final winter team (with all winter sports represented) around the end of April.

If you have any suggestions for juniors to add to this list, feel free to send them to us by email, or social media.

BOYS SKI ALL-JUNIOR WATCH LIST

Hayden Kauppila, Marquette

The defending state champion in the Giant Slalom, Kauppila posted the top Marquette times in both disciplines at last year’s state meet, as the Redmen won their seventh straight MHSAA D1 title, and 14th overall. His Giant Slalom time of 0:47.25 bested teammate Aaron Grzelak by less than half a second, while Rockford’s Nick Rupert’s Slalom time of 0:59.90 beat second-place Kauppila by less than one second. He was first team all-state from the MHSSCA in both events.

The Redmen had just one senior contributor a year ago, and could become the third program in state history to win eight straight state titles.
