Nearly 296,000 participants competed in Michigan high school sports during the 2025-26 school year, keeping the state among the nation’s leaders despite ranking 10th in high school-aged population.
If you needed another reminder of just how important high school sports are in Michigan, the latest numbers certainly provide one.
According to the annual participation survey released by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), Michigan had 295,634 high school sports participants during the 2025-26 school year, ranking eighth nationally.
What makes that number even more impressive? Michigan ranks just 10th nationally in its population of high school-aged kids.
The boys made an even bigger jump.
Michigan had 171,573 boys participants, moving from seventh to sixth nationally. That's the state's highest ranking in recent years after sitting ninth as recently as 2022-23.
Girls participation totaled 124,061, good for eighth in the country for the third straight year.
And Michigan really stands out when you start looking at individual sports.
Boys bowling ranks second nationally, while girls bowling and girls tennis are both third. Michigan is fourth in boys hockey and girls golf, and fifth nationally in boys basketball, boys golf and boys track & field.
Football remains a major part of the picture as well, with Michigan ranking sixth nationally when all contact formats are combined.
Overall, Michigan finished behind only Texas, California, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York and Florida in total high school sports participation.
The numbers come during another record-setting year nationally. More than 8.4 million athletes participated in high school sports across the country in 2025-26, marking the fifth consecutive year participation has increased.
For a state that has always taken its high school sports seriously, the numbers back it up.
Michigan may rank 10th in high school-aged population — but when it comes to getting those kids into the game, we're still playing well above our ranking.
